View Full Version : Week 1 - The Aftermath

The music was pumping and the champagne corks popping long into the night at Funs Filly Farm after a stunning week 1.

5 winners including a trot in the park for superstar Ceylon Sapphire (we're not worthy) in the G2 Oaks Trial, a noteable second for Shiny Silver and a storming debut for Sandstone Stormer were among the highlights. NoOt to mention a long overdue Group win for "The Jug".

On being awarded a rating of a mere 98 for her stunning Longchamps annihilation, Ceylon Sapphire said " Well I couldn't settle over there, I'm allergic to garlic, but I still managed to run backwards, do a handstand and beat those "boys"."

The stable are rumoured to be considering an audacious bid for the Derby instead of the Oaks, but the supplement may put them off. (Yeah right, after the winnings / Pick 6 / Bets / Simfair we had on :laugh)

Season 2 went full steam ahead with 4 action packed cards across Europe.

The highlight in Paris had to be the ease with which Ceylon Sapphire won the Group 2 Prix Noialles Oaks/Derby Trial, however the field in hindsight wasn't a Group 2 field, and I forsee Ceylon having much harder races as the season progresses......she's sure to come up against better horses over the coming weeks, at which point we'll see whether she really is a Hall Of Fame certainty.
Storm Chaser did his 2000 Guineas prospects no harm whatsoever putting up a decent figure of 105 to win the Prix de Fontainbleu and book hi place in the starting lione up for Newmarket in 2 weeks time.
There was not a lot to choose amongst the 1-2-3 of the Prix De La Grotte 1000 Guineas trial, with the ever popular Flying Foxtrot coming home in front, but beware, Salma and Party Girl were breathing down her neck!! All 3 now move on to Newmarket in week 3 for the fillies classic.
The last 2 races on the card at Longchamp were rather hot 2yo maidens, with Serendipity from the SSS yard walking away with the fillies race, and YLN's Meer Meer getting up in the fional strides to pip Nancy's Boy (SSS) on the line. Winners will no doubt come out of both races, but what impressed me where the first time out 2yo figures of 87 in the fillies and 92 (x2) in the colts.....very nice figures indeed.

We then moved over to Ireland and the Curragh......with Ruby Tuesday putting up a marvellous 101 in the 1m 6f listed race, a comfortable victory.
The 6f Maiden Fillies race looked a corker on paper, with fillies from the Nos Boss and Big George families in action, however they were both out done by another of the FFF stable phenomenon's Sandstone Stormer, 2yo, first time out, running a 94....amazing, however there is plenty of improvement to come from the 2nd and 3rd, and they'll no doubt be closer next time. Little Georgia didn't get her ground, and looks nailed on in the right conditions, whilst Bossa Nostra simply ran very green and is open to any ammount of improvement.
The Group 2 race on the card was won by Pewter Jug, once again from the FF stable, however I'm not 100% sure how strong this race was. The winner only posted a rating of 93, and as far as Group 2 standards go, this isn't top drawer.

Back across the Irish Sea to the Headquarters at Newmarket, the meeting was opened with a Group 2 1000 Guineas Trial, won by Queen Of Diamonds amazingly again from the FFF barn. She wasn't the most fancied of horses, but looks to have improved over the end of season break, and has trained on nicely, whereas the other didn't really put their best foot forward, and questions will be asked if they don't perform next time out.
The Abernant Stakes....remember the name of Old Blue Eyes, he took his second Group 3 event in style. 5 runs, 3 wins and a 2nd in a Group 1, surely a sprinter to keep on the right side of throughout the season, and welcome relief for the BCD yard to find a stable star after much trying throughout season 1.
The TOW yard had a nice 2yo winner in Chakra. The colt winning the 5f Listed race by a cosy couple of lengths, however a few of these will definately be hitting the winners enclosure shortly....a nice race, with plenty of potential.
There was a surprise in the 2m Open Maiden, not so much with the winner, Lasher Looser, but in the way in which he won, over 4 lengths clear, with a further 5 lengths back to the 3rd. The 109 figure posted by the winner looks decent, but if more work is put in, surely he can improve once more. The 2nd home, Gov Lepetomane must surely be winning soon. He looked the weakest over the distance on paper, but showed his class by putting up a fighting effort to get 2nd place....one for the notebooks there.
The Mariner, Zero Chance and E Zee Rider all qualified for the 2000 GUineas field finishing 1-2-3 in the Group 2 Guineas Trial. All 3 will now be in training for the big classic in week 3.
The star of the day in my opinion was King Lebron from the YLN stable. He had the ground and distance perfect for him, and posted a massive 112 on his way to victory in the Listed Classic Trial over the classic distance of 1m 4f. He won by an ever increasing 6½ lengths, but surely needs heavy ground on Derby Day to be competetive? A great run, and one I know the stable were surprised with.

Finally we went down the M11, around the M25 to Lingfield. Small fields were the order of the day at the southern track, with ALL 3 runners in both the Derby and Oaks trials making it to the big day fields. It's difficult to see any of these 6 making a huge impact at Epsom, however the trainers may well put them into hard training between now and then, and we could see a few surprises.
The 2yo 7f Maiden was won nicely by Dog and Pheasant from the SOF stable, a pleasing start for the very nicely bred filly, not extended to win by 6 lengths going away.

In summary, plenty of horses with plenty of improvement ahead of them in the coming weeks. Some good performances, but nothing out of this world.
Full marks to King Lebron for the performance of the week, and also to the FFF stable for a wonderful week with 5 winners, 3 of them in Group company.

We now look forward to the week 2 cards on Wednesday 14th July at 8pm.

The Workshy stable came away from week 1 with mixed emotions. Disappoinment came with well bred 2yo Bossa Nostra only managing 2nd, although the horse will come on massively for the run. Bossa Nostra will be run in week 2 looking for a Listed win.

Our other results were better than expected with 3 classic places obtained and Shock Horror once again finding one, in particular BCD's Old Blue Eyes, too good. Surely OBE will be stepping to Grp 1's. Shock Horror will now be put away to train with an eye on one of the Grp 1 sprints mid season. She might even meet gallop burner Nos Boss at some stage.

Week 2 plans involve a Oaks Trial debut for the nice looking, Spanish bred Muchacha Rápida. Workshy is hoping for a juicy field to test this newcomer.

Our one other runner will be another 3yo debutant. Coupling is out to find her level in the Sandown 2m event where a place is hopeful.

Stable rumours include;

- Zero Chance/E Zee Rider & Picksixtrix not taking part in the guineas with ground causing a major concern.

- Nos Boss being layed out for the Temple Stakes.

- Rockett Powered to debut soon.

The final week of the first season led to severe disappointments at the SSS yard. Perfect Model didn’t live up to the owner’s expectations, being beaten by some of her rivals into 5th place. She’s Electric got out of the wrong side of bed, and might as well have stayed there to save herself and the stable embarrassment. On the plus side, the pause for Season 2 has allowed the yard to make plans for the forthcoming weeks, meaning we will hopefully see our better horses show their true colours.

The first week of Season 1 at Longchamp was very pleasing indeed, with the well-bred Serendipity putting in an excellent performance. She is a quirky sort that loves the attention, and with a little bit of training in her crucial areas, we expect consistent results from her in the future. Nancy’s Boy ran a blinder, and was capped at the line into 2nd by Meer Meer, a well-bred horse from the YLN yard.

Season 2 looks even more exciting than the first week, with the introduction of the handicap races being brought into play. It is rumoured that there will be a few shocks and surprises from our yard in the coming weeks, so watch this space!

Here at SAM, we are quite astounded by the results of week 1.

In Race 9 we had breakout running, he really does have the ability, but unfortunately he keeps coming up against better horses. His main problem is the ground conditions he is an ok all rounder but not outstanding on any type.
He came last in the race but this was expected as the ground conditions were the least he likes.
Race 12 saw us enter Runaway, well what can we say, this horse does have potential in the right stable but I feel with the mounting pressure we are under here with renovations , new staff and new foals which need alot of work etc we can not dedicate the time to this horse that it needs, which really is a shame.
We will keep racing this horse in the hope of either passing it on to someone who has the time to dedicate to it, or to let it have its fun and retire.
Race 15 we enterered one of our new 2 year olds , we have high hopes for him - King of the mountain.
On paper it did look as though he was capable of winning, with only Chakra from the TOW stable standing in his way, however Hannibal Hayes from JJJ stable jumped into second spot somehow.
This horse we have good hopes for.
Race 19 saw us enter Dry County, we have not run him too much, but we know when we do he will excell.
However there was a very strange result here.
The joint faves were Dry County and Mac the Knife, but somehow Dans le Maison from the WFJ stable took the race, not even the owners and trainers were expecting this, it was a true shock.
Dry county came in second but we all know on any other day he would have won.
For race 22 we entered a new filly we have here at SAM, Kebushka.
We were unsure of what she was capable of and the race was just a run for her.
She came last which was exactly what we expected when we saw who she was racing against .
The big race of the day for us here at SAM was Race 4, Party Girl is a star in the making, and if she could lose her eye for the boys she would be a surefire winner everytime.
The long journey made her a little restless, but in all honesty she should have won or come second.
She came third on the day, which is good, Flying Foxtrot won so that in itself shows she is a star, if we can calm her down weve got a born winner

How are you getting on with Excel? Just looking at your stable at the moment, you have some nice looking types on paper, obviously I'm not sure of their potential but if you start at Maiden and work up, you'll be able to guage the whereabouts of each one. :)

RAW stable update

What complete and utter disappointment here at the RAW stable. Most of the horses were given a run in this early part of the season to give them a stretch. I think it is time to concentrate on more training. The classics are all but a dream at the moment, and if any of our potential stars get there we need specific going.

We had 14 runners out with a paltry 2 winners. Milligram won a two horse race, and Bronzewing lost her maiden tag in a 3 horse affair. He looks the part but just hasn't got what it takes to win a group race.

Looking at our purchases from the auction at the end of last season, things don't look to promising there either. The 3 we got are Dead Zone, Mr. Destiny, and The Seventh sign. 2 have run already to see if they have any kind of ability, and they failed miserably. Mr. Destiny is a bit backward and needs lots of training.

Back to the races....

Casino Royale is another wanna be winner. He has had numerous places in his past but can't break the maiden tag. Quoted at 11/1 for race 1 there were many punters gambling on him presumably due to the firm going that he needs.

Salma ran the the Group 3 Prix de la Grotte and just nosed out by WBF's Flying Foxtrot. Also unfancied, Salma is one of our stars. Once trained to full potential she will threaten all who race against her. Be warned now...

Blackjack Magic ran in the group 2 sprint stakes at the Curragh, but she did not get the important soft going that she needed. The going was good and she has a rating of 12 on good going so it was always going to be a struggle.

Finally, Pegasus went in the 2000 Gunieas trial at Newmarket. Unfortunately the heavens opened up and the going became heavy. We knew that if this happened he would have no chance, and so still needs to qualify. Given the right conditions he is in with a shout. Note: He was just pipped by Big George in the Open mile last year, so that shows you his credentials.

We will be lying low for a few weeks and hope for better ground next time.
