I just spent a couple of hours writing a chapter.. and for some bizarre reason when the box came up saying Do you want to save changes ? I clicked NO.. :yikes: I have tried to restore/undelete but nothing.. can anyone tell me if my deletion of this chapter is permanent and that my chapter is totally and utterly gone, dead, zapped, un-written and unrecoverable .. or is there a way of un-deleting .. if there is no way, i think I shall kill myself...

I don't suppose the word processor is on auto save is it? If so you may at least have some of it saved.

:hearty :hearty :hearty Yes it is on auto-save.. if I have, say, a power cut when working in Word, I get files auto-recovered.. but in this case I deliberately chose to delete/not save changes .... not the same. I have the book.. just not the chpater I managed to delete by a stroke of genius..

Try these, but DO NOT do anything else on your system until you've done it.

Bloody amateurs. You'll never write a bestseller if you carry on like this. :wink :D

I know Sparky, the last paperback has only sold 160,000 so I`m really slipping and was hoping this might help out with the mortgage..not meant to be if I go on like this... :hearty

Heres a question Susan, and probably badly timed....
What makes a good writer? Imagination? Good literacy?

I thought you used a pen and paper to write your drafts Susan??
If not, perhaps a good opportunity to revert back! Ooo

A valuable lesson learned the hard way though....time to start to train yourself to automatically press CTRL+S after every paragraph.

1. Yes, Vegy, I do.. notes and rough drafts but this wasn`t a draft...
2. GLOS.. indeed. Do you mean to press CTRL and CAP S at the same time or one after the other ? You`d think I really WAS blonde...
it auto saves every 10mins and I send everything at the end of the working day both to my husband`s work computer and my London daughter`s computer... belt, braces and zips... but this was just seconds too early for any of it..
never mind, I did lose a whole almost finished novel 5 years ago in our fire..
but when it might so easily have killed a lot of people and animals, somehow a book didn`t seem to matter. :hearty

Doesn't matter if it's capitalized or not....just hold down the CTRL key and tap the s (or S) key to automatically save your work. In fact, it's worthwhile remembering most of the short-cut keys in Word because they'll work in most other Windows programs too:
CTRL + O = Open
CTRL + S = Save
CTRL + Z = Undo
CTRL + Y = Redo
CTRL + C = Copy
CTRL + V = Paste
CTRL + X = Cut
CTRL + F = Find
CTRL + A = Select All

I bloke I know, vaguely, writes PLC code and programs and NEVER uses a mouse. All key strokes, pretty amazing to watch.:) but I'm really rather sad:D

Same here. I rarely use it in Word and quite often forget to use the mouse around the desktop too.

I must type Ctrl S when I finish a paragraph. Ctrl-S
When I hit the return key I type Ctrl-S.
Make one these a habit and you will never have a problem. Ctrl-S.

You do realise what that key combination does, don't you?
It will turn the selected text italic, then take you to the end of that selected section, opens another document and then inserts a page break.
CTRL + W+O+R+K+S+H+Y on the other hand will:
Close the document, Open a document, Insert a hyperlink, Save the document, and then repeat your last command

Those sites any use Susan, as your chapter will be in the tmp file.
...and change your auto-save to every minute.
