I'm getting a new PC, my current one keeps crashing, depowering, freezing, don't know why. Don't care. It's old and I was geting ready for a new one anyway.
However, can I install the hard drive in my current PC, into the new one as an extra drive. Do I have to wipe it clean? Or will it act as 2 separate computers in one?

I've just took delivery of a nice new monitor today, as my old one was fading, and the buggers no longer make the parts required. Much faster refresh than the old one, and the colours are remarkable in TFT's these days. Not cheap though, but I need it big to get all the betting software on at the same time. http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=64055

Just orderd the new AMd X2 4400 dual core processor, should have that next week. Can then set my trading software to cover 2-3 hours instead of 2-3 races.

If you need to keep the original operating system intact and want to use it as two seperate machines, you can probably just fit the drive BEFORE you switch on for the first time.

BUT make sure you read the warranty information as you may be invalidating the warranty by opening the machine!!

You may also need to download drivers for the 'old' operating system for the new components.

NB - You will NOT be able to do this if your current operating system is Windows 2000 or XP!!!

If all you want is to preserve the documents on the old drive, I would suggest fitting it AFTER setting up the system (bearing in mind the warranty warning above) and using it as a second drive.

That's about the gist of what I want to do. :)

sparky - i have 2 seperate HDD on my computer. - easy to install. if you open up your computer and look where the HDD is you will see a 'ribbon sort of wire about 2" wide' connected to the HDD. on this same wire there will be an additional connector, this is where you attach the 2nd HDD. (to be used as a slave drive).

windows should auto recognise the 2nd HDD - and call it drive F

upon starting up the computer i have 2 options of which HDD to use (C or F). you can chose which one by using the arrow key's and pressing enter. or just wait 30 seconds and the defauld drive will load up.

they both act as different computers:
C - drive, line my 'newer' computer
F - the same as my old computer

Cheers Presto, that's what I sort of hoped would happen. Can you drag and drop between the two drives?

I've got my new PC. I installed Panda onto it. Whilst installing it said that it had detected Norton and I should uninstall it. Looked at the add / remove thingy and it wasn't there, just the Symantec updater, tried to uninstall that, it said I can't cos my Norton AV hadn't been updated. so I continued the installation of Panda. Guess what? My new PC doesn't work. It starts up ok and does nowt. How can I start up in safe mode to uninstall Panda, so I can update Norton, so that I can then uninstall it so as to reload Panda?

You can't install another AV if you have any of the old one left, this is the problem Susan has. Norton leaves bits every where, that is it's problem, maybe a commercial one on purpose !!!

Best way to fix it is unistall Panda, then install Norton....run 'Windows Install Clean Up', and take off all Norton/Systemtec stuff, ie Nv stuff, Liveupdate, etc. Reboot....install Panda

Thats what I want to do but the PC is very very slow. It doesn't appear to accept commands.

Try in Safe Mode.....it's slow because Norton is clashing with Panda, suffered that myself when I upgraded 2 years ago on one of my systems. Norton is a pain in the ass, and not very good, overhyped like Beckham.

How do I start in Safe mode?

restart the computer and hold down F8 on your keyboard (or hit F8 repeatedly) while it's on the black screen...you'll eventually get a list of options . One of which will be to "Start In Safe Mode" that can you select by using your Up / Down keys on keyboard.

If I press F8 it asks me to select boot device.
