In February Aol sent an email informing us that they would be doubling our Broadband connection speed. I've tried contacting aol myself but they will only discuss the account with the main screenname. I have not noticed any change in the connection speed but does anyone know of a way of being able to check what the connection speed is.

Usually it is down to BT to actually increase the speed at your local exchange, AOL just put the order through.
I'm still waiting for my 2MB to go to 8MB when BT can actually find my exchange in rural Wales, even though I use PlusNet.

Thats why I asked the question some people seem to have been upgraded others not (some received their confirmation email 3 months after they were upgraded), but the real problem is that existing users were going to have their speed upgraded within 6 months yet new customers were already getting the upgraded speed for the money they were paying which sounds like shoddy customer service.
Thanks all for the help I'll try those links and see what they say.

Hi yerotsluap,
I am with AOL, I waited until May and no change, so I phoned them and within a couple of days it was upgraded. Seems a common problem. Just give them a bell and kick ass!

Paul,
I had notification about upcoming speed change around Feb as well. It finally happened at the end of July. Went from .5mb to 1mb (just tried that test and it is running at that.) They emailed me to confirm when it was going up just before it did as well.

Letter received form AOL this morning. (Finally after 7 or 8 waste of time phone calls)
Jist of it is our local exchange can't upgrade from 512 kbps to 1 mbps and that they are reducing the subscription costs.
Two problems with it as far as I can see. Firstly the BT website states that our exchange is enabled up to 2 mbps and secondly the reduced subscription cost still sees us paying more money than others getting the same speed.
Aol customer service is really :censored::censored::censored:

Always found AOL top class customer support, the problem they have is the same as you, it's BT giving out misinformation.
I was told to move by BT 3 years ago as I'd neber have broadband, now I'm on 2MB waiting for the 8MB upgrade. Strange that I live in the middle of nowhere, and the BT folk were here yesterday putting a few miles of digital cable across the fields.
I've held an AOL account since 1997, and have most of my mates with them, as it's simple to use, and downloads are 1,000,000GB's a month if you so wish.

One other thing, an ISP can't up speeds themselves, they can only do it when BT have upgraded the local exchange to allow it, and this can take months, even though they will tell the ISP otherwise.
