View Full Version : Tabs with Internet Explorer

Having managed to mess up my computer several times in the past, I'm sticking with IE this time.
Things are working reasonably well, but I do miss the tabs i had with Mozilla firefox.
What's the best way for me to quickly switch to and from sportinglife results page and betfair etc?
Any reply will need to be simple, as I'm bad with computers. The repairman in the shop has told me to keep out of ms config, registry etc etc. as I've made some right cock ups in my time!

Open up two browser windows and then hold down the ALT key and press TAB to cycle between them.
You'll soon get used to using your left hand thumb to hold the tab key and your left index to press tab.
If you want to use a mouse, then just click on whichever is the relevant icon displayed at the bottom of your screen in the Taskbar.

There is a plugin for IE you can download (I heard). Google "Internet Explorer tab plugin" should bring up relevant info.
HTH. :)

Just double-click the IE icon on your desktop twice. Or click the one in your Quick Launch bar twice. Or do Start, All Programs, Internet Explorer twice.
Or open one browser window, right click on a link and select Open in New Window.
I'm sure I can think of a few other ways too :)

Here's yet another way that could be more useful in the long run as you'll ever need to click it once.....
Open Notepad
Type "start iexplore" without the quotes
Begin a new line by pressing the return key
Type "start iexplore" again without the quotes.
So your notepad file should say:
start iexplore
start iexplore
Now save it to your desktop by clicking the big desktop icon on the right and giving it a name such as 2browsers.bat
It's important that you give it the extension .bat on the end - this won't work if you call it 2browsers.txt
Now, if you look at your desktop you'll see a new icon that looks like a little window with a cog inside it with the name 2browsers. Just double-click that and it will automatically load two browser windows for you every time.

Never knew that Glos, that's a handy little tip!

Or open one browser window, right click on a link and select Open in New Window.
Also the keyboard version of that - press Ctrl+N to open the new window - that's my 'habit' now :)

The new IE will have tabs.....typical MS, always playing catchup, no surprise that Buena Vista, for release in 2007 now, will be more 'Mac' like!

Thank you very much, everybody.
A frightening array of expert advice!
I'll get a few bets on first and then have a go. If you don't hear from me for a week, it means I've mucked up again.

More experimentation later.
Thanks again.

Matt, it gets even handier. If you create a text file that includes the URLs, it will also automatically open those sites for you too. So, for example, you could have the following text in your file:
start iexplore http://www.win2win.co.uk/forum
start iexplore http://www.racingpost.co.uk/
start iexplore http://www.sportinglife.co.uk/
Save that to your desktop and give it the extension .bat
Now, whenever you click on it, it will open up those three sites in three separate windows. You can add as many lines as you want, each with whatever URL you want. And you can easily cut and paste your favourite URLs straight from the address bar into the text file.
Hope that's useful to a few of you.

You're welcome, but I'll have to take back the bit about the rep - apparently I have to "spread it around a bit" :yikes: .
I guess I'll just give some to Vegy :D

It's not a problem. To tell the truth, I'm still exhausted after winning the 2,000 Guineas :D
Just a summary of the tip for automatically opening multiple browser windows for those who might've missed it:
1. Open Notepad
2. Add the following on a single line:-
START IEXPLORE URL (e.g START IEXPLORE http://www.win2win.co.uk/)
The URL can be any website you want to open automatically - the easiest way is to call it up from your favourites and then cut and paste the URL from the address bar in the browser.
If you use a different browser, simply replace the IEXPLORE with the command name of that browser - the easiest way to do this is to right-click on the icon for your browser, select Properties, and then cut and paste it from the Target box.
3. Add as many START IEXPLORE URL lines as you want - one for each browser window that you want to open. Just make sure that each one appears on a new line within Notepad.
4. Save the Notepad file onto your Desktop - easiest way is to click on the big icon on the left-hand side of the Save window that says Desktop.
5. Give the saved file whatever name you want BUT YOU MUST add ".bat" to the end of the filename (without the quotes) e.g. multipleIE.bat or open3windows.bat, or all_my_racing_sites.bat
6. Now just double-click the new icon and all of your sites will be launched automatically. If you're using a tabbed browser such as Firefox, they should all be launched under separate tabs.

I'm sure it's a misspelling and should be 2000 Guinness :)
