There aren't really that many decent free and legal sites these days... short of using P2P software (illegal but free) or my preferred method of newsgroups - cost $20 monthly for pretty much unlimited downloads ( 1Gb a day!) but more complicated to set up but once youre started it's quite a resource!
As for paid sites - a good one for country is emusic.com - basic package is $9.99 a month, and you do get 50 free mp3's to try the site.. I used to use them when it was unlimited, but not any more... but they do have the advantage of hundreds of thousands of songs, all catalogued, and all legal.

Legal???......P2P is great....as long as you aren't planning on downloading and sharing the whole back catalogue of the UK charts since 1960!!
I use Limewire, and Bearshare, just add the .com to both of those.
Downloaded 2 albums in 20 mins last week that weren't out until Monday :laugh (of course I'm going to buy them from the shops this week :doh)

I downloaded the new Bon Jovi album, and the....wait for it....Paul Anka - Rock Swing album :geek
The latter is worth a try John as there's some good twists on some classic tunes....I have a feeling you may enjoy a few of the tracks...the versions of 'Wonderwall' and 'Smells Like Teen Spirit ' are very good.

You can listen to samples of the Paul Anka stuff on Amazon.
Beware - It won't be everyones cup of tea !

I'm definitely going to get the Paul Anka album... sounds brilliant, though it's not the first time it's been done - Pat Boone did the same thing a few years back, as anyone who watched the Osbournes will know - theme tune was from his album, and was Ozzy's first solo single "Crazy Train" after he parted from Sabbath in '79. Anka's voice sounds in great nick though

I tend to download a few songs of a new album, if I like them our friend in Singapore buys it, and ships it over, only costs a fiver doing it that way, and legal :) I tend to go more for live DVD's though, if they can't sing live, I'm not interested in them.

Can anyone explain, in simple terms, how limewire (or file sharing in general) works. (bear in mind, im no genius with computers)
I have downloaded it and got a lot of stuff from it, but my mate told me that once it is downloaded, while i am online, other people have access to my files, including photos etc. Is this correct? I dont really like the idea of that.
Currently when I want something, I download it, then uninstall it, as I am still unsure about it. I know this is probrally a silly thing to do, and its also time consuming, so could someone explain if it is safe to use, and are my files safe?
Thanks,
Wayne

You can set which files you want to share and which you don't.
Mine is set up so that the only files available for others are those I have downloaded from Limewire in the first place. You can also set up to share no files should you wish to do so.
Not sure which options you have to change as I'm in work and don't have access to it at the mo.

I think they can only upload from you if you make it available as a shared file. I'm not sure, but I don't think they can just go rummaging about at will around your computer. I've no doubt one of the boffins on here will clear it up for you though. :)

As Mark and Sparky have said there are settings in Limewire and all P2P software to allow/deny other users access to your files and folders.
P2P software is a big network of computers. Anyone who is running P2P software on a P2P network (eg Gnutella, EDonkey etc.) can see the files on other PCs on that network, but only the files that the PC owner has allowed others to see. So you can download music from other people without them having access to all your personal files. Or porn.
I think Limewire defaults to only sharing with other Limewire users the contents of whichever folder you have set as the folder into which your downloads go. So if you download 50 music tracks then you can also act as a source for those 50 tracks for anyone else who wants to download them. You may have loads of other music tracks on your PC but no-one can get them unless you explicitly grant access to thiose tracks by sharing them.
Is it safe? Yeah. You might catch the odd virus or two so make sure your anti-virus software is fully up to date. Some naughty people like to use P2P to proliferate viruses round the world. They add the virus to an enticingly named file and loads of people download it and their PCs get ill. So keep your PC properly health checked.
It's not entirely legal downloaded copyrighted material via P2P but the authorities are cracking down more on people sharing huge volumes of copyrighted music, especially new stuff that hasn't been released worldwide yet, rather than the average home user who just downloads a few tracks each week/month.

thanks mathare,
when it comes to anti-virus, are the free ones sufficient?
at the moment, I have a McAffe 6 month free trial or something, and it seems fine.
would anyone recommend any other free ones? or should I buy one?
If so, what and where should i buy

When downloading an album from limewire or bearshare, I have to do each track seperate. Is there a way of finding an entire album and downloading it all at once? when I put in the title, i still usually get individual tracks.

Unlikely Wayne, unless someone has been kind enough to upload the full album as a zipped file.

Blimey Kookooheed - The Outlaws! Great band, sort of country rock crossover band - I have most of their albums - bought Hurry Sundown about 25 years ago! Did you know that Hughie Thomasson has been playing with Lynyrd Skynyrd for the last 9 or 10 years now along with Ricky Medlocke of Blackfoot - now there's a band! Love the Outlaws version of Ghost Riders In The SKy - superb shivers up the spine stuff!

Correct me if I'm wrong Larsson, I heard a few weeks ago that WinMX had been shut down? Unless the software company are gone but the software is still useable?

Nah,,, it wasn't shut down.
I use Bit Torrent now (the Bitcomet client). I can always get entire albums, and you can select particular tracks from the albums if you don't want to download the whole thing. You can also set Priority on the tracks, so that the ones you want are downloaded first!
I won't be going back to WinMX etc.

I like CCR as well, another classic band! Here's the best value 3CD collection - £12.99 delivered from play.com
http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=CD&title=581893&p=34&g=48&pa=sr
this is the complete 6CD box set - bit more expensive at £55.99
http://www.play.com/play247.asp?pa=pfa&page=title&r=CD&title=142790
The Outlaws live album is called Hittin' The Road - Live. There's also one called Bring It Back - that might be the same album under a different title - not sure though, but you can get that one on import from Amazon

Looks like I forgot to reply about Paul Anka last time to you Mark!
Thanks for the details - will check him out. :)
By the way did anyone watch that thing on Channel 4 last night with KT Tunstall/Athlete/James Blunt/The Corrs... etc? Live studio performances, very entertaining. Clashed with Later With Jools Holland though. :) :(

Blackfoot are like a heavier Lynyrd Skynyrd - they were one of the best live bands I've ever seen! Best studio album is probably Marauder, but Tomcattin and Strikes are excellent as well - live album is brilliant - called Highway Song Live, named after their classic track - all southern rock bands do a 'Freebird' style song, and this is Blackfoot's - slow build up then all hell breaks loose with guitar solo after solo - great stuff. Another band in a similar vein is Molly Hatchet - their Double Trouble Live is the best introduction to their music, that one is choc full of classics, even a version of Freebird!
