Post exactly what you want on your spreadsheet here, and I'm sure one of us will knock something up for you in a couple of minutes :D
Alternatively, email me your requirements at mark at racingsim.co.uk and I'll take a look when I get home from the office tonight (10pm-ish).
Mark.

fist of all, how do i copy a formula, so it works on the next row??
for a (simple) example. lets say the number in A1 is 100, and the number in B1 is 200. and I add them together
The total column (C1) reads 300
now, if i want to copy that simple addition formula for the the next set of numbers in A2 B2 and C2 how is it done

Loads of different ways to do it....
Click on cell C1, and press CTRL+C, then go to Cell C2, and press CTRL+V
or
Click on cell C1, and click edit, then copy, then go to Cell C2, and click edit then paste.
or
Click on Cell C1, then hover the cursor over the bottom right hand corner of the cell (your cursor will turn to a black cross), simply click the bottom corner and hold the left mouse button down, and drag the cell downwards...when you release the mouse the formula will have copied.

As mentioned above, if you tell us exactly what you want the sheet to do, one of us will knock it up and send it over to you.
That way you can see all the calcs, and learn from a working document, rather than try to create something from scratch, unless of course you wish to do the latter.

failing that.
if (when using XL at work). you save it as a file that will be compatable with the spreadsheet on 'works'. you should be able to open it at home. although some of the functions may not work.

it's 'free' if you download it from 'limewire' or a 'bit torrent' site (search google). but not realy legal.

Add the formula to go down a column...
Start in the cell with the formula in, highlight all the cells in the column you want the formula to go in and press ctrl+d
Add the formula to go along a row...
Start in the cell with the formula in, highlight all the cells in the row you want the formula to go in and press ctrl+r

ok mathare, you may be able to help with this one.
once i have ran my system, each horse ends up with a number (the highest most likely to win)
how do i sort the final results numerically.
(making sure that the horse name corresponds with its number)
sorry, i dont have a sample yet
hope this makes sense
thanks, Wayne

Select the cells you wish to sort - in this case that sounds like horse name in one column and associated rating in another column (plus any data such as race time, course etc but we will ignore that for now). If the horses are in column A and the ratings in B select all the cells in columns A and B you want sorted then from the menu at the top select
Data - > Sort
You'll be given the option to sort on three selections in ascending or descending order. Sounds like you want to sort only on column B in descending order here. Then your list of horses should be in order with the most likely to win at the top :)
