I'm thinking of getting a laptop.

Basically, I want to be able to connect to internet fast as possible, or at least 1mb from anywhere. What does this entail? Do I have to physically install anything, do I need a mobile phone/contract? What sort of prices am I looking at to surf regularly?

Thanks for any help offered.

You wont get 1mb on a laptop away from home unless youre in a wireless hotspot i would have thought and thats can get pretty expensive pay as you go or contract. You'd need to be using it pretty regularly to justify.

With the 3G Vodafone card i get 384kb in most places, definitely in cities, but out of town no more than GPRS 56k which is horrific and not worth bothering with.

I only use a laptop these days, home and away, the 3g card is priceless to me though i am using mobet on my phone more and more if I cant carry the lappy around, its surprisingly quick as it happens.

Good luck PS

I thought you said you can't afford Bet-IE yet!

Don't buy the cheapest laptops, they are slow, you need to look at www.ajp.co.uk , also consider a I-Mate PDA2K, or XDA IIs, these are as powerful as the cheapest laptops.

That's where catalogues come in handy with there buy now pay next year option :D Though it's mainly toshiba for around £600 1.4ghz processor.

:yikes: Two things;
Catalogs will mark up the price by 30%+ (same as PC World)
& They are well out of date by the time it goes to print, so your buying a laptop you could pick up for around 300% less on Ebay!!

My nephew (and his thicko dad) bought one from PC World on pay now/later....Paid £700 for a 2yo laptop, listed on Ebay for £100.....they seen him coming a mile off.

You could always try for credit terms on Ebuyer or Dabs. Mosty of all, ASK on here before spending anything.

See what you mean! The toshiba one for £700 in my catalogue is £400 on ebuyer OooYou rarely get something for nothing in this life and the 'buy now, pay later' deals are normally financed by the company either charging interest on the repayments or by bumping the price up in the first place. Either way they make more money on that deal than they do on you buying it off the shelf and paying for it there and then in full.

Why do you need the laptop? You want to be able to connect to the web from anywhere but why? Where are you likely to be where you will be away from your usual PC (presumably a desktop) but able to use a laptop?

You need to add VAT on Ebuyer, but not on Dabs, as it's included.

Finance on Ebuyer is easier to get than Dabs, even if your on benefits (they actually have a selction box for this!!)

I know ALL finance deals are rips, but when there's no other way, I'm not bothered, and the way I see it, hopefully in a few years I'll be winning back most of what I've ever spent in my life so I'll be the long term winner (touch wood).

I need one for when I visit family who live a way away, no pc available, other than cafes which your spending £3 a day on anyway and they're rubbish computers. I may just decide to not do the member bets on days I'm away, and being as they'll mostly be weekends, it may even pay not doing them :yikes: Saying that, Saturdays will probably turn great soon.

Im using my mobile and Mobet far more than my 3g card these days PS, it works fine and its a lot lighter to carry, if you want a few PC functions go for a shiny new PDA/phone instead of a lappy. You have to ask whether you need all that a laptop can do or can you save a few hundred quid and just update your phone/PDA.

You have to ask whether you need all that a laptop can do or can you save a few hundred quid and just update your phone/PDA.This was part of the reason for me asking PS where he planned to use it. If he later finds that he wants to use his laptop outside of houses etc then an XDA is probably a better choice.

Were it me however I would make sure I was profiting from my betting consistently before plunging it with an XDA and the associated running costs. Until you have built up your stakes safely enough to be able to cover the running expenses of an XDA or laptop or whatever I would stick with what you've got

Hmm sounds a bit expensive whichever. I'll just not bet when I can't get to a computer then, thanks for advice.
