That reminds me, I had a dream last night that Rangers lost and were bottom of the SPL. Which is weird because I don't give a toss about Scottish footy

OI! That's an offence under the "no mod shall diss another mod's footy team unless it's Grimsby or Luton" rule.... :D

To be serious for a moment (well a dig at Celtic dressed up as seriousness:)) I am a firm believer that leagues are decided by games played amongst the two or three challengers amongst themselves. Hearts are doing the best so far but it is early days.

Hearts have played two of these games, beating Rangers at Home and drawing at Celtic.

Rangers Have played two of these games, beating Celtic at home and losing to Hearts away.

Celtic have played two of these games, losing at Rangers away and Drawing at home to Hearts.

The good news for the scottish league is they look to have an exciting league this season and I think this is due to Rangers and Celtic been poorer teams than they have been for some time. Im not saying Celtic wont win the league but it is not going to be won until late in the season. It could be that Celtic are "flat track bullies" and choke the games that matter. For my money they seem to let in too many goals. They have got away with it against teams like Falkirk and ICT but teams who leak goals dont usually win championship.

I agree with some of that TH. even though Hearts are on top at the moment, its nice to see that its not the usual battle with only Celtic and Rangers - even though i support celtic. makes it more interesting

Im going to be careful here because I have only read it on Cefax and the source is the News of the world, but they are alledging Martin O'Neill is still on the payroll at Celtic as a consultant!

What is going on? That sounds more than a little shady to me, seeing as Strachan says he has not talked to O'Neill since July. Maybe O'Neill leaving Celtic was not as clear cut decision on his part as they make out? It could be there is more to it than meets the eye.

wb
17th October 2005, 02:00
I read that today too.
it seems that the Football association of Ireland are now a bit dubious about approaching him for to be our new manager. First of all, I thought he retired because of his wife? if so, why are the FAI looking for him, and if he is available, can the cash strapped FAI pay him?

I wonder though, if the money he got was really just a golden handshake from Celtic, and the papers are trying to make a big deal out of something fairly innocent.

tophatter
17th October 2005, 02:16
You usually get a golden handshake though when it is the firms idea to get rid of you - I can not see why Celtic would pay O'Neil a fat salary for doing nothing just out of the goodness of their heart, football don't work like that. They could buy themselves a half decent goalkeeper or another ex Coventry/southampton hasnearlybeen with the money they are giving O'Neil.

wb
17th October 2005, 02:20
good point. but why are they paying him then?

(this is not a argumentive question, im just trying to figure it out like you)

for a club that is 20 odd milllion quid in debt, what the hell is the reason for it?

surely there is no 'sinister' reason behind it?

Who knows, Im sure Larsson would have an opinion or at least a theory that is doing the rounds in Glasgow.

If it was not Martin O'Neil I would be saying it sounds like Celtic sacked him and could not afford to pay his contract off in one go so came to an agreement with him to pay him off weekly. However he seemed to leave on good terms and he don't strike me as the type who would keep quiet and mislead people about why he has left. Maybe Celtic just felt genorous but it does seem strange how no one knew he had this consultancy role. Maybe they are trying to keep him sweet and trying to entice him back when he is ready. If that is the case they are out of order to Strachan.
