What do I need to get to read .doc files? Mine won't read them. Dowload.com is just coming up with converters.

I take that back...notepad won't open them properly. MS Word and Wordpad are fine though :D

You should be able to open them in Microsoft Works if you have it (I think), plus there are a couple of free 'office' type suites you can use

Oh yeah, they're quite happy to give you that sort of freebie - you can open, view and print a file with these viewers, but not edit or change it.
You can get MS Office 'compatible' software here for free -
OpenOffice
http://download.openoffice.org/1.1.5/index.html
602PC Suite
http://www.software602.com/products/pcs/download.html
plus there is Star Office which is free for 90 days then $69.95 to register
http://www.sun.com/software/star/staroffice/get_eval.jsp
and this one - ThinkFree which has a 30 day trial then $49.95
