Oh thanks a lot for that as I had been going to ask the husband to buy me some.. we`ve got plenty of O Oil... it`s probably catarrh in the tubes after the cold but it`s driving me nuts .. not painful at all, just deaf !!

The Eustation tube goes from the ear to the back of the soft palate in the mouth. If that gets blocked by snot you will feel as if you can not hear as the eardrum is unable to equalise air pressure.

It may not be earwax in other words give yourself time for the cold to completely clear.

I always use cotton buds. They're the only thing that gets the vaseline out. :wink

A friend of mine is a nurse at A&E and she says nearly every day people go into the hospital with cotton buds stuck in their ears. They try to clean their ears with them and the bud comes off the end and sticks in their ear. There is a warning on the box 'Never insert a cotton bud into the inner ear or nose'

Funnily enough I have recently gone deaf in my left ear as well. It has happened to me before and the doc said it was probably sinusitis as my sinuses are less than 100% in tact as I have broken my nose a couple of times. This time it is quite painful but everything I have read on the 'net seems to suggest I just get some Otrivine (which I have) and bung that up me snout (which I have been doing) and give it time to clear up. They also said antibiotics might work, or they might not - which is very handy. And despite the missus' nagging I won't be bothering a doctor with it, at least not for a few days. I'll see how it is middle of next week before I consider doing anything proper about it.

i had the same problem for a couple of weeks - went deaf, ear drops etc didn't do anything. but took the nurse less than 10 seconds with the ear gun to clear them both out. was fine after that.

I was born partially deaf , and wear a hearing aid when out socially . Build up of wax is something I have to deal with on a regular basis.

As others have advised , DO NOT USE COTTON BUDS...just pushes the wax deeper into the ear...I use cotton wool wraped round a match , have done so for years .

If wax does build up , some WARM..obviously not TOO WARM , Almond Oil , dropped into ear helps break up the wax.
