Just downloaded the latest update for Zone Alarm, containing its new cache cleaner....ran it, and freed up over 1.4 GIG !!!!!!!!!

I'm the first to admit that I'm not the best at computer housekeeping, and am amazed at the amount of cr*p this thing has found/deleted.

The Pro version including the cache cleaner and spy ware search is available free for 15 days, it then reverts to the standard free version. (That's what I always do anyway :D)

Worth downloading just to run cache cleaner once.

I used to use the full pro version (and highly recommended it for a good couple of years) until a few weeks ago when I downloaded the latest update and it caused all sorts of problems. It wouldn't load properly and left my system completely open. I've had to get rid of it altogether and now use Agnitum Outpost pro - seems to be a decent enough firewall and it also comes with antispyware scanner and other plugins.

It can cause a lot of problems these days, I stopped using it over a year ago, and have taken everyone I know off it. I either use Notron Firewall, very good, or Blackice.

:yikes: Will have a look around, I was just amazed at the space it freed up when clearing the cache. I guess that's more down to my bad housekeeping then ZA being a quality product then.

Their is an option in IE to clear the cache, just press TOOLS!!!

A previous ZA update actually stopped me from getting access to my online bank - I had to roll back to the previous version then updated a few weeks later when I figured the problems were fixed - it was fine after that, but this time I couldn't fully uninstall the new version, which meant I couldn't re-install the older one. Was a real mess to sort out, took me hours to get it all fixed.

Luckily I don't get to play with the patients - used to back in Scotland but down here they have other folk who get that 'privilege'

Personaly I hate Norton AV. It bogs down systems and hasnt got a high detection rate (56%), where as AVG (which is free) has a 83% detection rate. Some of the best virus detectors you might not have heard of, but they are well worth a look.

Never had any probs with Norton AV - just updated from 2003 to 2006 version. :)

Racer, where did you get those detection rates from? I'd be interested in what the percentage rate is for PC Cillin.

Hi John,

Doing a search on the net I came across an independant test which a major magazine had run some tests on the different types of AV software and what was they best. They infected 15 PC's and used quite a few different types of software. Anyway AVG was 2nd of the lot at 83% and Norton 5th at 56%.

I did used to use Norton back in 2002....but Im happy with the AV I have now and wouldnt change.

BUT if it aint broke? Why fix it eh? so I am hoping that with you been happy with it, that it works well and is easy to use, high detection & low system resource hogger.

Forgot to add.....

I dont think there will ever be a perfect AV. New virus's are appearing every day and ithe best advice I can give to anyone no matter what AV you use is to run your own installed version at least once a week and update it daily. Also run at least 2 different versions of Online AV scanners to double check.

Best to be safe...than sorry!

Cheers Racer, that's much appreciated.

Yeah, true what you say about there never being the perfect AV. I don't think it's possible to create an AV that is 100% capable of constant protection without ever failing. It's too much to ask! There are some quality AV's out there though.

I used to use AVG; nice slender, clean tool. Though I had problems with updating it, I think it was a known bug at the time.

Again, thanks for the info.

Panda is the only one I know that stops DOS attacks.

I use Norton AV & Firewall on the main system, and it doesn't hog anything, or slow it down, but then with the gear I have it wouldn't :D I can process DVD editing, photoshop, burn a CD, and still use the web without so much as a stutter :)

Lol Keith..

I to have a powerful system, so it shouldnt do that for me either.

Personally my fav AV are:

Avast (Im using that now)
Panda
NOD32
KAV (Kaspersky Antivirus) but it is a bit to restrictive in a few ways and very very prisice. You have to configure it so precisely lol for it to work 100% fail free.

:)

Heard some good things about AVAST - will check it out.

I used Kaspersky when I did my OU courses. Very good. Never any trouble. :)

Yes it is a very good peice of kit. I found though Sparkyminer that the firewall and scanning proceedure etc was far to restrictive, which is a bad thing, but only until it is set up, then it's the works.

I do like my AV though, never let me down! :)
