Glad to be of help! Can I ask, are you having it done for sinus problems? Something I've suffered from for years, either through allergies or the usual colds in the winter.

I have the problem of having a lot of bone in the top of my nose also i have a disfigured septum which restricts breathing in one nostril as it is almost all closed up . I am a boxer and i am sick of splitting the skin on the bridge of my nose as the bone cuts through when i get caught hard so i want that filing down and i would like some cartlidge cut out if poss and maybe a complete reshaping to facilitate respiration

AH, a boxer, I'm not surprised you need to go through that op then! I bet you snore like a buzz saw! I wish you luck with it - I'm sure it will make a huge difference to your breathing problem.

I can offer on this subject the guidance given recently to a family member who did some research: rhinoplasty procedures (a "rhinoplasty" isn't a single operation: it's a classification referring collectively to a large number of different ones) are done by ENT surgeons and by cosmetic surgeons, too. The reality is that ENT surgeons are much better regulated. Anyone on the UK medical register is allowed to call himself a "cosmetic surgeon" regardless of his qualifications and experience. Many clinics held in ill repute within the medical profession advertise openly for patients and employ "cosmetic surgeons" who have very limited experience at rhinoplasty. Some of them are even doctors who are unable to get a good job in the NHS. I dare say there are some very good ones as well, but sadly the layman has no reliable way of telling which are which. I would only go to an ENT surgeon for anything described as "rhinoplasty", myself.

So in English, your best going to see a Polish joiner :D

My husband used to suffer appalling sinusitis more or less permanently.. when I married him I married into an entire cabinet of nasal sprays and drops.. in the end we moved and our new GP suggested a new young ENT consultant who operated.. he had holes drilled in the bones and some bony bits high inside his nose scraped, all to widen the passages... this was exactly 20 years ago, ( I took our then 6 month old baby in to see him and she is now 20 and a half ) and he has not had a sinus infection since.. just normal colds, even though the surgeon said the tissues might thicken and he might need it doing again. He said it wasn`t very painful post-op but because everything swells he couldn`t breathe through his nose for a while and basically felt bunged up for some weeks... but it was a miracle op for him. It was done privately through his then BUPA membership with the University..if he had gone on the NHS list he would still be there as of course it wasn`t life threatening...
hope this is useful.. no doubt in 20 years they have made the op even better.

Arguably. Surgeons are only plumbers and joiners who've been to public school. :)

Is that why there are so few women surgeons ?The OB network.. or are there other better reasons ?:hearty

I think the reason usually given is that all the years of postgraduate training and education necessary for careers in surgery don't fit in well with families. They don't like giving junior (i.e. less than "consultant") jobs to women who they think will disappear to have children, and so on. Which means there are necessarily few female applicants for consultant posts because few have had the requisite years of experience. So they say, anyway. There are some female ENT surgeons and some in other sub-specialties; just very, very few female "consultant general surgeons". Women who want to stay away from being GPs tend to end up in more "ancillary" careers like anaesthetics and the various branches of pathology in which they can (allegedly) have time off with young children and then just return to work without it mattering so much.

I'm sure this is right. Plumbers steal their ideas from gastroenterologists and just charge twice as much for them. ;fire
