View Full Version : Neck pain

On Friday morning I felt a kind of stiffness in my neck on the right hand side, somewhere around the bit where it connects up to the right shoulder. It was causing me a lot of pain yesterday so on the advice from some people at work I took paracetamol and applied a hefty dose of ibuprofen gel. It is still hurting a lot this morning. Every slight movement of my head brings on the pain.
I'm not sure if slept on it awkwardly Thursday night or twinged a muscle or something somehow.
I am assuming it will pass in time but does anyone have any advice that might help? Other than don't move my head - I got that a lot at work.

Lucky you, my neck is fused!! Only have one mobile joint left in it.
You need to lie down, as when you're upright your neck muscles are stiff. Keep them relaxed for most of the day. You'll probably find the problem is not actually where the pain is, so run the gel all over the neck area. It is also nice on toast.....

I've had this myself, I think.
It sounds possible that you might be describing a condition called "Torticollis". If that's what it is, I think ibuprofen will be much more helpful than paracetomol, and alcohol can help it as well (drinking it, I mean, not rubbing it on, because it's a good muscle relaxant).
If there's one particular position (maybe somehow "not quite straight"?) in which your neck feels very much less uncomfortable, that's supposed to be a reliable indicator of Torticollis.
If it is "Torticollis" then it's a real bugger for about 3 days but should be feeling about 50% to 75% better by Monday morning. So if it's not, you might want to start thinking about "showing it to someone" by then.
Nobody quite knows what causes Torticollis, but it can be alarmingly painful. One theory (which seems astonishing but there's apparently a lot of evidence for it and many people believe it now) is that it's a virus and you catch it just like a cold from someone who's got it! I'm not joking.

Thanks guys
I will smear the gel all over my neck and see how it feels in the next few days. I can always take Monday off work if it doesn't feel any better :)

Something you could try -
tilt your head slightly forward place 3 fingers at the right hand side of the botttom of the neck apply pressure and move your hand to the left hand side you should hear it click and crack

Or you might simply have moved a bone out of position and a good massage by a good massuse or osteopath or chiropractor may get rid of the problem.

Any improvement Mat?
Been there myself, and Keith's right in that the location of the pain isn't necessarily the location of the problem. If it's a one-off a few days will generally see the end of it but if it recurs it's definitely worth following Marcus's suggestion - shell out a few quid now to prevent ever increasing problems later on.

Hands up if you're in::swear agony...
I would, but I can't, my neck/shoulder hurts way too much :(
Not sure if this is a doctor or A&E job though. A&E is nearer and I'm not sure I am still in the right catchment area for my GP since I moved.
I thought about phoning NHS Direct who were great last time I used them. But I have forgotten the number :splapme Anyone help me out?

That's what my GP has said it is this morning. He said it is normal for it to get worse for 4 or 5 days and then get better. Today is the fourth day so he has signed me off till Monday as I can't easily use a computer with my neck like it is. Typing this is agony but have you seen daytime TV?
