View Full Version : Sore eyes
Between work/college/gambling/recreaction, I use the PC for about 5 or 6hours a day. Most days, My eyes do sting after a few hours and they get very tired. I get my eyes checked regularly (the missus works for specsavers :) ) and they seem ok, but I'm just wondering if anyone else gets this?

My eyes also get very very sore, if we cook anything that causes the grill to give out a huge amount of heat/steam.

get down your pharmacist and get some eye drops - just explain the symptoms and they'll give you the best ones for your needs.

My other half has got an ulcer on his eye.
Apparently the doc says he got it from a change of water when we went to Amsterdam.
His eye was weak due to optical nerve damage he suffered a few months back when he got jumped in the street and kicked in the head a fair few times.
He is having to put drops in every hour on the hour - all night long too.
Ouch. Sounds sore sam. I got a cist (spelt wrong?) on my inner eyelid (twice! - one on each) which is very unusual and very painful. I had to go to the hospital and get my eyelid turned inside out, and the cist scraped out.
Horrible!

Yeah - he thought he had got something in his eye which had scratched it.
During the flight home his eye closed up and was weeping a yellow sticky substance.
We went to casualty and they put some dye in it and said he had a large cut on his cornea.
He had to go back today to see a proper eye specialist.
He told him it was not a cut it was an ulcer.
Its 5mm wide and apparently if you don't catch it quick it kind of eats into your eye and your eye deflates then you have to have a cornea transplant.

Are you using a normal monitor, or TFT Wayne.....the former refreshes and strains your eyes, TFT do not.

I have one of the old monitors. about 100 megahertz I think. Thats probrally the problem.
I want to get a new monitor, but I hope to get a new pc soon, so I don't want to buy a monitor on its own yet.
thanks

Check your refresh rate by right clicking on the desktop>properties>settings>advanced>monitor, it should be at least 72, otherwise your eyes & brain pick up the flicker, even if you don't notice, cause headaches, eye strain, etc. You can get TFT for about £80 now, ask for advice here before buying though.
Thanks. Changed it to 85 from 60 per second, so I hope that make a bit of difference

60!! Blimey, that is the problem, you can visually see the refresh at 60

The actual eye soreness is caused by dryness... a good eye drop, as Big C says, used regularly, will help. and also try not to spend too long at once in front of the screen. Just a short break will help.
If your eyes are itchy and sore you could have a mild allergy ..a tablet of antihistamine - Clarityn best - will sort that out. You can buy it over the counter now. bUT when I had my eye operation last year the surgeon said 99% of eye soreness etc is caused by dryness of the eyeball..:hearty

I actually get horrendous sore eyes after a 24 session at work. Very dry and gritty.. and trying to get home on the scooter... :yikes: 5 minutes of cold air and I have to stop as they start stinging and streaming with such force my specs actually get covered in tears. I need to take a 5 minute break before starting off again.
I actuallly drive a bike also Big C, so Im sure that does not help!

Yeah, problem at this time of year is the cold air... close the visor and you steam up too much, plus after I've been on 24 hrs I need the cold air to keep me awake for the half hour journey home!

Just one question - is the 5 to 6 hours continuous?
Health and Safety guidelines recommend a 5 minute break every 20 mins of continuous use or a full 20 minute break each hour if the other is impractical. And that means NOT looking at the screen!!!
Obviusly on the exchanges this is not really a good idea for traders but if the refresh rate doesn't fix the problem, it is something you need to consider.

The original guidelines were for CRT monitors (not TFT) but they haven't changed them yet.

You should also take a few minutes out each hour to switch your focus away to something in the distance rather than only a few feet in front of you

Just one question - is the 5 to 6 hours continuous?
.
Not really. I will do about 2 or 3 hours straight at college. When at work, I am back and forth to the PC. At home, I spend about an hour or two at a time. I don't really take the reccommended breaks to be honest though.
