View Full Version : What is the saddest song ever?
I love songs and poems that are sad, and about unrequited love and stuff like that for some reason. Especially ones which strikes a chord with you. We were talking about this in the pub, and trying to figure out the saddest song of all time.
a few sad songs that I like:
The streets - dry your eyes
Bobby goldsboro - honey
Roy orbison - only the lonely
James blunt - Goodbye my lover
Jim Reeves/Elvis/Various - There goes my everything
but my fav. has to be Roy Orbison's beuatiful dreams :)
What is the saddest song?

I;d certainly agree with the Roy Orbison tracks, he had the perfect voice for that sort of song.... Oldham's Queen suggestion is a good one too... as is another Queen song which became more poignant with Freddie's passing - "Too Much Love Will Kill You". If you read the lyrics on the last couple of Queen albums there are quite a few songs that are obviously very personal from Freddie...
Another sad one that I;m sure especially gets John Noakes in tears... Old Shep... :wink

A Deep Purple song called "When A Blind Man Cries" is another sad one... a surprising ballad from them, stuck on the 'B' side of a single in 1972, they now do it live regularly.. lyrics below
If you're leaving close the door
I'm not expecting people anymore
Hear me grieving, lying on the floor
Whether I'm drunk or dead, I really ain't too sure
I'm a blind man
I'm a blind man
And my world is pale
When a blind man cries
Lord you know
There ain't no sadder tale
Had a friend once in a room
Had a good time but it ended much too soon
In a cold month in that room
We found a reason for the things we had to do
I'm a blind man
I'm a blind man
Now my room is cold
When a blind man cries
Lord you know
He feels it from his soul

Another Roy Orbison one.
I was just listening on the radio to the story behind Roy Orbison's ".....everything you want, you got it..." song. Although it appears to be an upbeat song about how much he likes her, it actually bordered on being obsessed with her. He was treated really badly by her apparently, but he was saying that he would still do anything for her no matter what. He was consumed by her, and therfore helpless to how she treated him. He was totally defeated and realised it, so he just said he would more or less do anything she wants. Thought that was a bit sad.

Been a while since I nominated one, but when it's the record that reminds you there's a Sad Song thread, it deserves at least a mention!
So, today's offering is Silent All These Years - Tori Amos.

Elvis, Dont cry daddy!
Yeah that is a real tear jerker... I'd also add another classic song by the King - In The Ghetto.. even thinking about that one gives me goosebumps!
I know some people think that elvis songs are overplayed (you can't get enough of the king if you ask me though!)
but if you listen to the lyrics of 'You were always on my mind' it really is a fantastic sad song. Willie Nelsons version is good too.

Or read them.
Artist: Gilbert O'Sullivan Lyrics
Song: Alone Again (Naturally) Lyrics
In a little while from now,
If I'm not feeling any less sour
I promised myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower,
And climbing to the top,
Will throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to who
Ever what it's like when your shattered
Left standing in the lurch, at a church
Where people 're saying,
"My God that's tough, she stood him up!
No point in us remaining.
May as well go home."
As I did on my own,
Alone again, naturally
To think that only yesterday,
I was cheerful, bright and gay,
Looking forward to, but who wouldn't do,
The role I was about to play
But as if to knock me down,
Reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch,
Cut me into little pieces
Leaving me to doubt,
All about God and His mercy
For if He really does exist
Why did He desert me
In my hour of need?
I truly am indeed,
Alone again, naturally
It seems to me that
There are more hearts
Broken in the world
That can't be mended
Left unattended
What do we do? What do we do?
(instrumental break)
Now looking back over the years,
And what ever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to have cried the tears
And at sixty-five years old,
My mother, God rest her soul,
Couldn't understand, why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart
So badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally
Alone again, naturally

So, I'm sitting there, minding my own business and:
'I will be with you' by T'Pau
suddenly plays and I sit there blubbing like a baby.
Worth re-starting an old (but classic) thread. :)

If I feel miserable and don't feel like cheering up then I listen to these:
Emma by the Sisters Of Mercy (original by Hot Chocolate which is a surprise as it is record about suicide).
The Things You Said by Depeche Mode (probably my favourite track of all time)
Victims by Culture Club (though I don't admit it to anybody I know :D)
What Makes a Man a Man by Marc Almond (probably even sadder if I was gay but hey, I can empathise).

Since my brother-in-laws funeral where we played
Coldplay's The Scientist
It makes me emotional when I hear it.
Another recent song that is quite sad is the Johnny Cash version of Nine Inch Nails 'Hurt'

Quick weepie for weekend.
More Evanescence - Taken from The Open Door Album - Lithium. Even if you don't know what Lithium is used to treat, these lyrics have to be some of the most disturbing and sad ever written:
Come to bed, don't make me sleep alone;
Couldn't hide the emptiness, you let it show.
Never wanted it to be so cold
Just didn't drink enough to say you love me...
Is anyone here old enough to remember Butch Moore's Irish eurovision entry in the 60s?
I love the line "Still, nobody knows that I'm crying... cos I'm walking the streets in the rain"
Great stuff, the likes of which we rarely see nowadays.

Not quite old enough, we didn't have telly in our house till 1966. So I googled to see if I could hear it and found this site where you can listen to every Irish Eurovision entry since 1965 !

That wasn't a song it was a disaster.
Ireland has such wonderful singers where on earth they found her and what posessed them to use that entry I will never know.

I've posted it in the recommendation part before now, but Untitled Number 1 by Sigur Ros.
It is a very sad song accompanied by an even more sad video. Watch it on youtube.
