Can anyone tell me what it means when a horse is described as being (or not being) 'forward in its coat' ? I've heard it a lot and I understand that not being 'forward in its coat' seems to be a negative, but why ? :doh Is it just a way of saying that the horse doesn't seem keen, or does it mean something specific ?

It just means the horse has it's summer fur, which is thinner & lighter than the winter bum fluff it has. I've never actually proved to myself it is positive or negattive. If the horse is fit, it runs well. All NH & AW horses, run mostly with a winter coat, and yet they still win!

I didn't notice many at Chelters with a summer coat, so the racing must have been backward and crap :doh :)

I thought it meant the horse got its coat from George at Asda instead of Moss Bros...

Thanks Keith - seems obvious now you've expained but it had me baffled, I kept hearing comments like 'Yes, he looks fit but I'd rather he was a bit more forward in his coat' and I couldn't see anything wrong with it ! :doh

Same media chat crap that also comes up with, he'll improve for blinkers!! No they don't! It makes more horses go slower than faster.
