I saw some RAM on e-bay and it appeared cheap enough.

Where is the best place to buy RAM, and how do I know what to ask for :yikes:

Do I need to know the make of the PC?

(Im no computer genius as you may have gathered by now)

You need to know what the motherboard will support, or what you have in at present.

I tend to get my RAM from Ebuyer as that way I know I am getting the real deal and they won't rip me off

Sorry mat, I'm really useless at this sort of thing. How do I find out what I have, and what the motherboard will support. My lack of PC knowledge is embarrasing for a 25 year old :yikes:

WB,

Is your machine a standard build machine (ie a Gateway Performance 1234, or Dell 9150) or one you have cobbled together yourself?
If it is a standard one you could try:

www.mrmemory.co.uk

They have a flow-chart to use to determine what type of RAM your machine was built with (if it was a standard built one).
They will also undercut any price you find elsewhere which is cheaper than them.
I have used them....customer service good.

Thanks guys.

Ada, the computer is one I bought. I would not have a clue how to put one together, which is a shame. I want to learn more though, and am picking up a few 'lessons' from a friend soon.

'crucial' are generally regarded as the best quality suppliers.
i get mine from 'scan.co.uk' as they often have very good 'today only' deals - but you have constantly check for them. they are also quite close driving distance to me - but not sure what the P&P is.

Are those "Scan My PC Now" links OK to run from these types of sites, no spyware etc!

I've used that one on Crucial's site, no problems with it. It's a useful wee program if you're not sure what memory type you need, and of course you don't actually have to buy it from them!
