I have seen a lot of horses being gambled from big prices into single figure price. There could be multiple reasons for this it could be punters money or bookies money, a trainer or jockey has talked it up on tv etc.
Is there any way of recognising a genuine gamble and has anyone done any analyses of horse that their price has come in say 40%.

I remember Oldham once saying that proper gambles may look like a horse being backed in 2 points and then drifting!

Real gambles are more difficult to spot these days as the markets are chiefly controlled on Betfair.
At smaller tracks where there is less interest, quite often the way to spot them is a sudden 'jump' of a couple of points (sometimes after the horse has been drifting slowly). This usually means that someone on course has been waiting for a price and put a decent amount on it. The bookies shorten it up by a couple of points and nobody is interested at the shorter price. It then drifts back out a point to settle the market.
Beware of 'on course gambles' (steamers) - this is often the result of 'suits' trying to impress by splashing their money about. Occasionally the steamers do go in but by the time they become a steamer, you have probably missed any value.
