At least that's what I thought I heard when all of a sudden, the "inside of my PC" started beeping... rather like a siren... neeeeee-naaaaaw-neeeeee-naaaaaw it went.

I figure this is my motherboard. I mean, the mobo beeps when I switch the PC on but only once and that's what happens with most PC's anyway.

Having switched the PC off for a minute or two, I turned it back on and all was fine... and it's still fine now...

Touch wood it won't happen again, but I fear my PC is dying a slow death.

Just a shot in the dark John, but I vaguely remember seeing in the bios once before something about it beeping if overheating? Probably barking up the wrong tree but just a thought!

On my previous computer, the number and type of beeps it made was part of the diagnostics, but obviously you needed the destruction book to interpret it.:)

You can check what the beep codes mean by googling for your bios type and 'beep codes' .... certainly sounds like overheating, mine made the same siren noise when it overheated last year and fried my graphics card! Worth opening up the case and checking that the fans are still working and aren't clogged up with dust, amazing how much dust gets in there, mine were chocka - housework's never been my strong point! :D
I've learnt my lesson now and clean the fans approx once a month :)

Thanks for the responses guys, my thoughts were overheating straight away. I'll have a look inside the thing at the weekend although I ain't got a screw driver so it could be tough! Maybe I'll ask Mat to come and work his DIY magic on it...

Definately sounds like overheating John. I had a similar incident last week. Left the pc burning a dvd while I went off for me dinner. Returned shortly afterwards to the 'neeeeee-naaaaaws'. Checked a few diagnostics and found the cpu was running at almost 100% and about 20 degrees above normal. I shut it down and opened it up, cleaned out all the dust from the cpu heatsink and fan (and there was alot) and it has been running fine ever since.

Thanks Laf. I'll clean it out!

Overheating makes sense really when you consider how hot and humid it was when it happened.

Try pouring water on it, that will make it go quiet.....
