I need to get a new fan, but don't what sort of specifications to look for. Can anyone tell me do I need the right one for the right processor? Or just right number of pins, right size, right DIM whatever that is etc?

Most fans are pretty much the same really....they wear scarves and shake rattles...usually found boozed up near football stadiums and VERY noisy :D

Seriously though, PC fans are the same. Check the voltage, it'll either be 12v DC or possibly 5v DC. You say it's for the processor so you'll need to get a fan that's the same size - 50mm, 60mm, or 70mm and the same thickness - 10mm to 25mm. Don't go for a thinner fan but you'll be fine with a thicker one providing you have long enough screws. You'll also need to match the RPM which should be indicated on fan. Don't go lower but, again, you can go higher, but it's likely to make more noise. And the connectors need to match too otherwise you'll need to buy an adapter.

The other thing to remember when you put the replacement fan in, is the orientation. This will be marked with arrow(s) to show which way the airflow passes through the fan. The last thing you want to do is put the fan in the wrong way round so that it's sucking warm air onto your processor.

Have a look at the markings or sticker on your fan - you can usually find out all the information you need for a replacement by typing the serial number into Google. Otherwise, let the dealer know what that number is and they can usually recommend a suitable replacement.

DIM probably means Dimensions.

Thanks Glos.

Well I've got one in the end, though it wasn't easy! Ooo Went down my local pc shop hoping they'd be as cheap as ebay (as if) but he only had a couple of old stock fans, and of course they come with heat sinks. So he gives me one that is in accordance with my processor, amd athlon 1.6ghz, internet says these fans should be "A" socket which should be right. I get home and the sink dwarfs mine, spend half an hour having no clue how to unclip the old one, take it back, swap for a 60mm sized one, and just unscrewed the fan and put it on my existing sink. So basically had to pay the price of the sink in order to get a fan in minutes rather than days from ebay. (£5) Spose it was worth it, you could hear my old one down the road! Ooo

I didn't realise they worked by sucking heat away from cpu through a sink, if this is the case, shouldn't you be able to feel it blow on your hand? The blades are exactly the same angle as old fan so I shouldn't imagine it's blowing instead of sucking....:+)

Depends on the direction of rotation.
