My wife's cousin and her husband (both from Canada) will be spending a few years in England while he is studying. The are also planning to have children during this time.

Over in Ireland, maternity care is free to all nationalitys from pregnancy onwards. Is this the same in the UK?

Thanks.

It depends. Are they English Canadian or French Canadian?

I think they are entitled to free healthcare,
but only at the Kabul English Embassy though!

As far as I know, they just have full Canadian citizenship.

Canada is part of the commonwealth though, not sure if that means anything.

My sister in law was on a visa from the Phillipines, but received all her pregnancy heathcare free on the NHS!

Think they will be okay! :)

After having have had all 4 chidren in a country where I was born (England) I have to sign a form to say I have been a U.K resident for I think from memory at least two years, (which annoys the life of me because I was born in perivale baby factory 47 years ago and I still have to produce the relevent documents to prove so,

They just register with a GP as soon as they get here, and then everything is free. In fact they can help themselves to a new bed, x-ray machine, etc, as everyone else does it here

It may be free but if they can afford to go private I would recommend it!

Private maternity care? Not really necessary.

why's that when the maternity care is normally excellent as it is midwife led as they are practisioners in their own right, most are truly dedicated staff they must be as they are doing a doctors job on nurses pay, by the way my wife is a midwifery sister at scarborough hospital so i know all about the extra hours for no pay as they would never leave a patient at risk.

as above, also it's very difficult to get decent private care as it's mostly consultant practises and even america is now beggining to realise midwife led care is the best.

That's the one area I would imagine isn't alot different private than nhs. My maternal experience was of the highest order and top priority by those dealing with it. Except the :censored: midlands of course!
