View Full Version : 50 films to see before you die
presto
9th August 2006, 16:30
first off a rant at 'film4' - they showed this list a couple of weeks ago, as 'film4' went freeview, there were many films in this list which simply didn't deserve to be there - then i was told that film4 had the broadcasting rights to show 40 out of the 50 films, which annoyed me a bit as it was totaly biased self promotion ;fire .
so what would us W2Wers put as the 50 films you must see (for the benefit of john) :D ----- thank you! (John)

Presto, is Battle Royal the one with loads of Japanese children in... and the objective, without being crude, is to be the 'last one standing' so to speak? If it is that then I have seen it, don't think I could watch it again!
Green Mile, I've added to my list as it's been recommended to me personally too.
Total Recall is excellent.

First off....I would like to thank everyone who has posted on this thread so far....thank you.....thank you for not mentioning The Shawshank Redemption.
Far too many people say that this is their "Favourite movie of all time", this shows such a lack of originality that it has become an in joke with a mate of mine...most women tend to say it's their favourite. It has all those qualities that they think qualifies as a "classic" but really it's just an enjoyable little flim. No more.
My suggestions.
Glengarry Glen Ross.
The Sting.

Not all good films but ones that have cracking surround sound or amazingly realistic effects:
Black Hawk Down
Matrix
King Kong
Saving Private Ryan
Visually stunning films:
Traffic
True Romance
Ocean's Eleven
Jaw-dropping special effects/car chases/etc:
Gladiator
Kill Bill
House of Flying Daggers
Ronin
Bullit
Genuinely great films that will stand the test of time:
All of the Lord of the Rings
French Connection I and II
Oh Brother Where Art Thou
Leon
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
Apocalypse Now
The Untouchables
Almost every Ealing comedy made

Agree with a lot of the above, but as a fan of the gangster genre my all time faves would be The Godfather (all three) and Goodfellas. More recently trendy is the cockney gangster theme and here the unmissables are:
Sexy Beast (awesome performance from Ben Kingsley)
The Business
Love, Honour and Obey (more violent comedy than outright gangster stuff)
The Krays would be there if it hadn't been spoilt by such crap casting.
TheOldhamWhisper
9th August 2006, 21:03
Scum - looks quite dated nowadays but a must see (IMHO).
House of Flying Daggers (as mentioned by Glos) - stunning film with strong storylines and a very neat twist to a complex plot - should be watched at a cinema with the original subtitles.
Cool Hand Luke - just a darned good movie.
Blackboard Jungle (or just about any Sidney Poitier film will do).
Stir Crazy - possibly the funniest film I have ever seen!

The Thing is...I've got SR on DVD, it's a great film...it's just another Stephen King short story, like the green mile, stand by me etc...a good tale but my point is that it's not an original, or very good choice for someone's favourite film of all time.

Some nice looking lists there!
A few that stand out from that lot, that I haven't seen and would like to:-
Edward Scissorhands
If...
Full Metal Jacket
Kill Bill 1 & 2
Life of Brian
Taxi Driver
Pi
Se7en
Sleepers*
Snatch
Taxi Driver**
The Graduate
The Green Mile
I heard The Green Mile was ok but really long and could have been ended much earlier, but they dragged it on and on and on and on and...... We have Se7en on DVD but I haven't watched it, it's definitely a night-time movie though by the sounds of it. Wednesday night I'm at the cinema with Person B... I have no idea what's showing at the moment though...
I have seen Taxi Driver** but can't really remember what happens much. I remember some guy is given a car, and it's parked, and it's raining... and there's a taxi driver who drives a yellow taxi... I have also seen Sleepers* but can't remember it too well... can't remember it at all actually.

Must add Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon to my list. This one is not to be missed and it should be compulsory for everyone to watch it at least once in their lifetime!

Bit of trivia> The soundtrack won the best oscar award beating one of my favourites, Gladiator.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
I just watched this for the first time. Blew me away, from start to finish. It's a hazy bubble of confusion right the way through... rewinding, fastforwarding... erasing away the memory Joel and Clementine had, but at the same time it unveils the weird and wacky times they had together. I love films like this... films that play with my mind and confuse me so much that I can't wait to watch them again and again and again. I think this is why I liked Memento too, it's just a wrath of confusion... back and forth time tripping.

That was a great film Wayne... the young guy who sung the lead had an amazing soul voice for his age.
Another for a bit of gentle humour is Local Hero - a great feel good movie if ever there was one!

It probably wouldn't make many peoples top 50, mine included, but me and the missus have just watched "London" and thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought it was going to be a bit rubbish after the first 10 minutes, but it turned out pretty decent.

Watched one of Sergio Leone's less well known Spaghetti westerns the other day - A Fistful of Dynamite, with cracking performances from Rod Steiger as a Mexican bandit and James Coburn as an IRA bomber (it's set around 1914). Superb music as always and typically brilliant cinematography from the master, well worth checking out.

Am I the only person who has seen "La Vita Bella"? It is a masterpiece, truly amazing. You'll be laughing your :icon_tong off as he woos the girl but by the end you will be full of shock and rage and want to kill Germans. The most bittersweet ending of all time.
Forget The Green Mile / Shawshank Redemption / Reservoir Dogs or any of the other "insights into the human condition" type movies. This one id THE BEST OF ALL.
