Hi David, not quite sure where or how this went downhill really. I'm doing the same thing as last year, but the results are just not coming. Perhaps it's a bad spell, perhaps I need to re-evaluate the whole thing. A lot of the selections are getting placed at high prices so perhaps I'm a bit unlucky too. Another problem is that I was able to do it every day last year, but I've very pushed for time now. I could be missing those all important big days and hitting some bad ones when I do actually get time for this.

With the NH season winding down after Cheltenham, I'm going to keep going as normal until then, and if there's no turnaround, I'll re-assess. If I cant bring it back to life - I think I'll take whats left of the money and run!

I don't get on Win2Win as much as I used to but this is still looking like a good thread, well done for keeping it going! How's life treating you? Have you been going on this for a year yet? I've just had a read of this thread since November and it looks like you had a bad spell so a good job done on the recovery! I noticed you made some comments about stopping the whole thing if the bank dropped below 10K - the reason that didn't happen is because you built in the 1% staking contingency. If you'd had stayed at 2% you'd have definitely dropped below. Things like that make it all worthwhile! Keep up the good work. I've missed the racing recently so will be keeping a closer eye on this with interest. :wink

Hi John, yep it seems to be making a comeback somewhat. I've learned a lot of lessons along the way too which will help next year. Firstly, it's only later in the season that the handicap marks can be really figured out in my opinion anyway. Early on, there was a lot of guesswork involved, and I lost a lot of money there. Next year, I may wait 'til January before starting. Also, it doesn't work too well in the summertime, due to infrequent NH racing and (more) guesswork about the handicap mark. So it's really best from Jan-April, when the NH season is in full swing and horses are running regularly.

Thankfully, the 1% of the bank protected me on this learning curve. If I had left it at 3% indefinitely, the bank would be almost wiped by now. That's a huge lesson I've learned. When I hit 30K, I though I was walking on water, and considered leaving the stakes at 3% - dreaming of making 100K or more. Then, as it always does in this game, the rug was pulled and I was taken back to earth. Luckily I had dropped the stakes though. The bank dropped down to nearly 10K, (all time high was 30K) but I've clawed it back to 16K now, and hope to get it to 20K before I finish at the end of April. It has certainly been a huge learning experience for me, and even though I've lost a bit, I can't really complain with 15K profit I suppose!

Right folks, that’s it for another season. I re-started back in January where the bank stood at just over 16K which was around half of the all-time high (quite some time back now). I’m pleased to report that a profit of roughly five grand was achieved which pleases me greatly as I was fearing I had lost the touch in handicaps. It also puts me into a good position when this starts back in January 2010. The reason I now only run it from Jan to April/May is because I’ve realised that NH handicapping during the summer (and early season) is very difficult and unreliable so I now prefer to wait until mid season when the form is well and truly settled. This means less bets, but I think it gives me an edge. Thanks for the kind comments along the way.
