Interesting odds...a bit skinny but I might be tempted to back myself :)
On the question of points, I think the fairest would be to multiply the number of players by reverse finishing position in each tournament. So, in a ten-player tournament, the winner gets 100 pts, second gets 80 pts, third 60 pts, etc down to 10 pts for tenth place. If only five players take part then the points awarded would be 1st = 50 pts, 2nd = 40 pts, 3rd = 30 pts etc. The points would therefore reflect the relative difficulty of winning a tournament with more players.
At the end of the "season" you can then just use total points scored or divide the total points by the number of games played (with a minimum of five games to qualify). The problem with the last approach is that someone could win a few early tournaments and then stop playing in order to protect their average. With the first approach, people will still be encouraged to keep entering to try to boost their score.

Another way would be to have an order of merit
mathare
14th January 2007, 19:20
Or you could just do it on money won over the tourneys - that will automatically reflect the difficulty of beating more players

But as Keith says, the money will fluctuate - so you might get only two players in the $10 tournaments but twenty in the $5 ones.

But as Keith says, the money will fluctuate - so you might get only two players in the $10 tournaments but twenty in the $5 ones.Tourneys need a minimum of three players to happen I think. But that triviality aside, you do have a point.
If you went reverse order of points, e.g. 10 for the winner in a 10-man tourney should second get 9 or less? Should the winner get any bonus points for the win? Should last place get 0 or a point for turning up and paying the entry fee?

i have always been in favour of 'winnings' as the decider.

No problem there...first place gets an extra 5 points, second 3, third 1.
So a $5 10-player tournament ($10) =
1st - 15 pts 30 pts
2nd - 12 pts 24 pts
3rd - 9 pts 18 pts
4th - 7 pts 14 pts
5th - 6 pts 12 pts
6th - 5 pts 10 pts
7th - 4 pts 8 pts
8th - 3 pts 6 pts
9th - 2 pts 4 pts
10th - 1pt 2 pts
A $5 5-player tournament ($10) =
1st - 10 pts 20 pts
2nd - 6 pts 12 pts
3rd - 4 pts 8 pts
4th - 2 pts 4 pts
5th - 1 pts 2 pts
That reflects not only the number of players taking part in each tournament, but the extra bonus points reward the more successful player over the course of a season. You could also award double points where prize money is higher, as indicated with the red type - this would also act as a spur to people to enter the higher-prized tournaments to boost their total points. So long as competitions are multiples of $5 then there's no reason why you can't give triple points for $15, etc.
Points for turning up and contributing to the pot is also good, in my view.

not sure about that glos, theres lots of variables to work out, the variables change according to the buy-in. with an order of merit the winnings account for buy-in, number of entries etc..... and it's easy to work out as the $standings are displayed at the end of the tournament, an order of merit also rewards the money places, rather than just giving points for finishing nowhere.

Yes i agree with Presto you cant award someone points for finishing knowhere. If you are going to do it on points it has to be for first 3 only

The variables are quite simple - number of players = number of points + bonus points for first three places.
Is an order of merit something that's computed automatically by B365? If so, I suspect they use a similar system but, as you've already pointed out, it uses a lot more variables. And I still think someone who takes part should get some kind of points reward to reflect that. A player that plays in 5 tournaments (winning one of them) would therefore have at least 19 pts against the 15 points for a player who only played (and won) once. If they weren't awarded a point each time, they'd both have 15.

how about multiplying the number of entries by 2 and the points are shared by 50% for the winner
30% for second
20% for third
eg 12 entries= 1st 12 points
2nd 8 points
3rd 4 points

Presto won....by default then the points don't start till Tuesday :laugh
My head was melting with the maths the other day....supposed to be simple....but I feel an Excel moment coming on :)
As far as I'm concerned it should only involve the first 3....and number of player variables.
IE.
1st 5pts, 2nd 3pts, 3rd 1pt.......multiplied by number of players! Or something....
mathare
15th January 2007, 10:36
1st 5pts, 2nd 3pts, 3rd 1pt.......multiplied by number of players! Or something....The Bet365 cash award at the end of the tourney is broken down 50/30/20 multiplied by the number of players :wink
