Do a virus/adware scan to being with. Then disable any plugins.

Sound advice - it's almost certainly something being loaded up in the background. Also run a tracert or ping to check that your ISP isn't having a problem delivering the pages to you.

still having the problem it seems to open this website and the racing post website slower than others.

You seem to have the same problem as me...it's the Betfair adverts! I bet when this page slows right up, there's a gap in the top right-hand corner where an advert should be? And when the page loads quickly, I bet the advert is there?

I imagine the Racing post is even worse as it's probably plastered with Betfair ads.

Most AV/Firewalls have ad blocking these days.

Yes...tried it without AV or firewall and it's still happening. The page is just sat here trying to load. A tracert to adfarm.mediaplex.com shows long delays trying to resolve the dns names of the various servers en route:

Note how the first trace didn't resolve the names, just the IP numbers. When this happens, that's when the page loading slows down. I suspect there's a problem with their servers.
