I've just went to my spreadsheet which contains 30 sheets of my main systems.

And they are blank :yikes:

I don't know how or why this has happened, but I have not done a backup in a month, and a LOT of data is gone.

Similar to a system restore on the PC, Is there any way of reverting back to a file from say 2 days ago. This will really mess things up for me should there be no solution.

What version of Excel?

It may have Autorecover but whether you have enabled it is another matter...

It's actually an open office spreadsheet Mat :(

Open up Excel and go to Tools -> Options and hit the Save tab.

If there are Autorecover options there and the box is ticked you're in luck. If not... :yikes:

Do you take the files around with you at all? To uni for example? Would you have a copy on USB/memory stick/flash drive anywhere?

Hi Mat, It's 2.0

Hi Mat, It's 2.0From what I can tell it should have some autorecovery function. Now it's just a case of finding it and checking to see whether it is enabled or not...

Check any Options/Preferences menu for some sort of save options. I'd expect to see it in there somewhere.

I have Open Office, just checked and the Autorecover is in Tools/Options ...
in the dropdown menu on the left click on Load/Save, then General and in the window on the right there's the option to always create a backup copy, and also to save autorecovery information every however many minutes you choose. If those are ticked you should be ok - fingers crossed ! If not sorry I haven't a clue if there's any other way to get them back.

It only takes a minute to backup these days, and with software like Second Copy, Winzip or Synchormat you don't even notice, as they are automatic in the background.

OpenOffice says what Scaaty has typed :)

Thanks Everyone. Unfortunately, I didn't have it set to make a backup. Because I keep temporary paper records, I still have all of my stakes for each system or method. However, about a months worth details have been lost which will be a big blank in the overall picture. Just shows the importance of back-ups. I'll definitely look into back-up software now.

And it's odd how it takes something like this to make one consider back-up software. I had something similar last year and now use Second Copy backing up to an external HDD. I also transfer files between home and work so I usually have a fairly recent copy on memory stick. I'd be lost without my betting records s/sheet

Nothing to stop anyone buying a £10 memory stick, leaving it in the back of the computer, and using Second Copy/Winzip Pro to backup in the background. You never know it's there.

I've often heard Keith and Glos etc. stress the need for backing up files. I only backed up once a month, but this is simply not good enough when you have daily data. I've learned the hard way and encourage the rest of you to listen to the advice given!

Don't worry, they won't!! It's like betting, we only learn from hard mistakes.

Funny you should say that...I've just had to replace the motherboard in my PC (hence the reason I've not been online for a couple of days). With the board installed I slapped in a new disk, connected my backup disk, and within 10 minutes my entire system was exactly as before...but about 8 times faster now :D

Ha Ha, I've been trying to teach the wife the joys of spreadsheets. She wont seem to work for free though! Damn them feminists and their crazy ideas.
