I've been feeling really crap for the last few weeks - nothing I could really say was wrong exactly, but I just didn't feel right, tired, no energy, grumpy, blurry vision, putting on weight which I've never done before .... I'm never ill ( except for the odd hangover ! :D ) and I've been refusing to accept that I might be, been beating myself up about it to be honest, thinking I was turning into a middle aged wuss, there was nothing wrong with me and I should just get off my backside and get on with things etc. Well. anyway, a couple of weeks ago I started getting horrible dizzy spells, and finally went to the doc - got the results of my blood tests on Wednesday and turns out I have an underactive thyroid, been given tablets, one a day for life, and although I've only been taking them for two days I feel loads better already ! The difference is amazing, like a huge weight's been lifted off me ..... good to know the symptoms were real and I'm not going crazy !!! :wiggle:

Well, no more crazy than usual anyway ! :D

Oh, and a nice little extra benefit is that I now get free prescriptions for life ... not just for the thyroid pills, but for everything. Not sure why that is and got to say it seems kind of unfair to me, why should I get free prescriptions when other people with long term illnesses don't ? I had to fill in a form and it seems there are only about half a dozen conditions that qualify .... very odd. :doh I'm not going to refuse though !

Nice to know it's a pretty easy fix for what sounds like it could be quite nasty. But one pill a day ain't bad is it?

Not bad at all - and bearing in mind my age I'll just be swapping one type of daily pill for another ! :D

My partner has to take tablets every day for her cancer treatment. We have to fork out every month for that and they won't even let her get more than 1 month's worth each time. I would have thought that with all the money going into cancer research charities they could afford a few freebies for long-term welfare.

But more likely it's going into the Chief Executive's Final Salary Pension scheme.

I have been feeling tired a lot in the last few months!

It's not due to Sleep deprivation, because I sleep sound as a pound.

It's not Chronic Fatigue Syndrome because a colleague has that and I don't
get some of his symptoms.

Should get myself checked out, just have a fear of the doctor saying

"All that's wrong with you sir, is that you are a lazy fat :censored: !"

:D

That's exactly what I meant about it being unfair - I just don't understand it. My husband has to have 4 pills a day to keep his blood pressure under control and he has to pay for all of them, why should thyroid pills be exempt ? Anyone out there connected to the NHS have an explanation ?

I think you can buy a pre-pay thingy if you need a lot of prescriptions but don't qualify for the freebies. Not sure about the details, but I think it saves you some money.
There's a link on this page.http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Policyandguidance/Medicinespharmacyandindustry/Prescriptions/NHSenglishprescriptionforms/index.htm

What's the difference between the doctor saying it and us:D . Would it make it official if the doc said it?:laugh

weezing and panting all the time,

no different from usual then Presto... except it's usually the local women that cause it :wink

Hope it's easing up for you though as chest infections can be a bugger to get rid of, and can often leave you susceptible to getting them more often. You might want to move and join Silax in Spain to avoid our damp weather!

scaaty my wife has to take thyroxin and gets free prescriptions it's because if left untreated the condition can be fatal :yikes: don't worry though it takes years and just that one pill a day keeps you healthy, my wife works full time and i'm unfit for work with a prescribed industrial disease she gets prescriptions free i have to pay :doh the systems bonkers but you might as well take advantage of it :thumbs

Cheers Piggy - yes, I know it can be fatal if left untreated, but surely that's true of lots of other conditions too ? I'm pretty sure my husband wouldn't last long without his blood pressure pills for example. Obviously the NHS can't afford to give freebies to everyone, I was just interested as to how they decide who qualifies and who doesn't. Anyway, I've been having lots of fun telling my other half that my illness is more worthy than his ! :D

Hmmm, don't suppose that does his blood pressure much good either ! :laugh

Hope you're feeling better now Presto - it's bad enough just having a cold/flu and not being able to get to sleep, must be ten times worse with asthma. :yikes:
