Is it running hot? Games are heavy going for the old processor and graphics, so it could be getting a bit hot and crashing out completely. It could also be a driver problem - is it happening with all games or just certain ones?

Possibly overheating - make sure the vents under the laptop are clear (I use a couple of CD cases, one on either side to prop the laptop up).
Another good idea is to get a couple of 'stay cold' inserts - the type you get in freezer bags.

interesting idea - do you have a link to the sort of thing you use? My laptop is prone to overheating as well... sadly it has a desktop processor and heats up badly.. I use a dual fan thingy with extra USB sockets but I think it's only making little difference, and might actually be making things worse by blowing dust into the laptop vents and fans on the bottom of the machine. I now have to take the bottom to bits to clear out the dust on a regular basis, and use CPU throttling software to reduce the temperture a wee bit.

Cheers Oldham, I thought it would be that sort of thing, I think we may well have some of those hidden in our freezer. :)

Plenty of fan coolers around, but no one ever checks the fan size, count or speed when buying them.
You need 3 fans, as this will ensure you cover the air grid on the laptop, speed over 2000RPM, and 6cm+ fans.
