In particular the Spam that Oldham was talking about. The Viagra/Watches/Gibberish.....my account has recently become a host for this "virus" (not in the computer sense...but kinda...you know what I mean).

What do they benefit from this? Nobody clicks on the links...they just bombard your account. I have no idea how they got my address...I know I've probably stuck the address in somewhere while trying to claim free razors or some such...but is that it now? Is my account dead?

I use Spamfighter (the free version) - it works as well as any. You could ask your ISP if they would consider 'grey-listing' - this means a delay in getting emails but cuts out around 95% of Spam because most of it is from spoofed email servers. Grey Listing requires that the original server re-sends the original email.

Another one worth a look is Mailwasher - I use the pro version, but there is a free one as well. ANything that lets you check your mail on the server before it gets to your PC is helpful, as you can delete it from the server so it doesn't pollute your system
