View Full Version : Grrr at Norton on Vista

I have Norton as my online protection and although I have never been totally happy with it, it has always doen an ok job.
Until the past week that is.
For some bizarre reason the following folder
c:\ProgramData\Symantec\SubEng
has been creating files that have taken up over 30gb of my hard disk.
I use Vista and when I try to remove the files it says I do not have permission.
I tried to change the ownership of the files and it said "Access is denied"
The files keep appearing every day - to the tune of about 6 GB per day.
Does anybody have any idea what these files are or how I can delete the bloody things.

You should be able to delete them in Admin in Safe Mode, uninstall then reinstall AV. Seems a few others have had a problem, but no answers I can find.

thank you - worked a treat BUT....
I have now lost my internet access. I rebooted after deleting the files and cannot access the internet even using an ethernet connector stright into my router.
Could I have damaged something during the delete?

More likely the firewall is blocking it, switch it off for a few seconds and try. Don't leave it off though!!

Not a firewall problem in the end. It turns out that it was an adapter problem affecting my wireless and ethernet and USB. Something that got deleted damaged the adapaters. So, I have saved everything to my partition (thank you for that Acer) and reloaded Vista on my C: drive.
Everything now works perfectly.
Question for you though Keith.
Should I be running Norton at all when my Router has built in protection?
Does it make more sense to be doubly sure?

Everyone I know who has had problems with AV or interet security software has been running Norton so personally I'd never use it. If you are determined to pay for these things I'd use McAfee else use freebies such as AVG

It came free with my laptop but to be honest I hate it. It is so intrusive and seems determined to stop me accessing or downloading anything.
I think I will ditch it and start using something a bit friendlier.

People who aren't comp-savvy have problems with any AV, just search the web.....same as folk who complain about jockeys :D
I have a hardware firewall, but always run a software one, and AV. Best to use a condom even if she says she's on the pill eh? :wink (....and why the :censored: didn't I know that in 1990? :D )
