View Full Version : Jockeys - poor or not?

I saw an interview the other day where Jamie Spencer was telling a story about how Frankie Dettori has problems telling the taxman why he has no money every year. The point of the story was to moan about prize money in racing and even being champion jockey meant very little.

It set me thinking about jockeys' earnings.

Presumably, they get paid for each ride and get a % of winnings. If so, the likes of Spencer, Moore, McCoy and Walsh earn a mint. Or do they?

Does anybody have proper knowledge of how much the jockeys earn and what they get paid for other than the actual ride?

Don't they get a riding fee and then 10% of the winnings? So the flat guys get a helluva lot more than the jumps. SO Detorri should STFU complaining....he's the richest jockey this side of the atlantic.

Is the riding fee a flat fee or can the jockeys set their own rates? Having Frankie onboard is worth more than having Dazzler Holland sat on your nag isn't it?

I wouldn't want to pay a flat rate fixed price when the quality of the goods I am getting can vary so much.

From the BHA:

70. In Flat races the fee to a Jockey, or a Jockey riding under the provisions of Rule 61, shall be £96.35 (plus V.A.T. where applicable except that in the case of Apprentice Jockeys the fee shall be inclusive of V.A.T. where applicable).

71. In Steeple Chases, Hurdle Races and National Hunt Flat Races the fee to a Jockey, or a Jockey riding under the provisions of Rule 61, shall be £131.52 (plus V.A.T. where applicable except that in the case of Conditional Jockeys the fee shall be inclusive of V.A.T. where applicable).

.....as for percentages......Jocks get about 4%......http://rules.britishhorseracing.com/Orders-and-rules&staticID=125500&depth=2

They have to pay there own travel & expenses, which can add up.....especially for that helicopter :)

Presumably, where you have an arrangement like Mccoy and McManus, there is a % of the owners prize goes to the jockey too, as I have seen McCoy ride some right donkeys (owned by McManus) in races where he probably would have had the choice of better horses?

Nope, that would be against the rules. They way they get around that is to pay a retainer fee for a year.

That's something I never knew. I always thought freelance jockeys could charge what they wanted, but instead they just pick the best rides as this gives them more chance of picking up a decent winners percentage. I think it's more then fair that the jump jockeys get more considering they put their kneck on the line every race.

On these figure it works out that top jockeys on the flat earn around £200,000 per year and top jump jockeys about 180,000 due to lower prize money.

This is excluding retainers, sponsorship and any other endorsements.

Not a bad earner.

When I used to own horses I was "offered" Lester Piggott to ride one of them.
I don't know how it got in with the offer but there was an address of a large Irish warehouse for consumer goods, an order form and a note of Lester's favourite televisions!
