If adding 10p to First Class stamps meant all the Post Offices stayed open, would you pay it?

Happily, they are essential to many small communities.

That would just mean the people who spend enough money to make a difference (ie business users) would choose an alternative postal provider with a final result of losing the Post Office services even more.
The answer probably lies in selling franchises to local businesses (which is pretty much what will happen in most affected villages), saving the wages of whoever ran the postoffice.
A better idea would be to channel the efforts into educating people to use more economical (and easier) ways to manage their money and pay their bills, such as direct debit.

May only be 10pennies , but incresing the cost of postage by a quarter to my company and we're looking at an extra £20-£30 per day.

Just a couple of snags with the idea....
1. The extra 10p would go to Royal Mail and not Post Office PLC. Any cross-subsidy would almost certainly be illegal under European competition law.
2. Postwatch (and Royal Mail's competitors) would also cry foul and declare the increase to be anti-competitive.

Our post office has survived thankfully but it must be very hard for say those that opposed the war in Iraq and see the spending on that, what is it...£4 or £5 billion or more up to now...compared to the £150 million subsidy a year of the rural post offices. Just might make you lose more faith in your Govt.

Who owns the Post Office and Royal Mail?
The Government :icon_tong
Who has screwed the Post Office and Royal Mail?

All these closures are due to them letting the services that were provided by the Post Office to be done elsewhere ie. paying bills, collecting pensions etc..
Now because they are not making money, they want to cut thier costs and the only way to do that is to close them.
