Note to moderator - the following information is already in the public domain.

In January 2008 the Office of Fair Trading obtained an injunction against a Brighton based trader called Wesley Beagley who was responsible for sending out mailings under the names 'Anthony Cochrane' and 'Michael Rose Investments' offering horse racing tipster services. He was also involved in a similar mailing that used the name 'Jonathan Wells'.
The cost to subscribe to these services was approx £595. Some 3000 people (I was NOT one of them) were duped by the glossy literature and forked out their hard earned sums. Needless to say, their money simply vanished into the pocket of this operator.

If any members of this forum or anyone within knowledge was a victim of this scam please indicate a reply and further info will be given.

This has been going on for years in one form or another, not really news, and it'll continue to happen for years to come as long as money & gullibility go together.

3000?

Without wanting to sound unsympathetic, each one of them deserved to lose that money!

May well have been going on for years but this is due to the lack of any criminal prosecution; always dealt with as a bad business transaction (hence Advertising Standards etc.)
There is an act of criminality involved in these "scams" and attempts are now being made to pursue this line of approach against the perpetrators.
Comments about those caught up in the "scam" are not requested.
Thank you

Anyone who spends that sort of money without first proving the system is an idiot, or at best massively naive. Would you spend £600 on a promise of some magic beans or a golden goose? It amounts to the same thing. Any service worth following will prove their results and provide past data for you to check. They will also offer a trial and/or a money back guarantee. If you're not getting that - don't part with a penny. It's just common sense really.

Don't give up on Pro Lays or Veggies bets. I'm going to start using them as win bets on my new website and postal/phone service. £300 per month and worth every penny with this track record!
See you in the payout line etc etc etc

Pete - I think there's a lot of "professional" tipsters use the profits from their phone lines to lay every horse they tip - the prices are artificially beaten down to make them a good price to lay.

If it's not true then I want to know how Tommo is so well off!!!

If someone 'sells' tips, takes money, with no intention of giving any tips at all, that is Deception. A criminal offence.
If they give out tips they have picked with a pin, it's going to be more difficult to prove.

Most of these rogues just use the 'Racing Post' and follow one particular tipster religiously, selling on the tips. The more honest of them will only ask you to pay if the horse wins. Some of them will ask you to place a bet on their behalf. If you don't pay up they don't send any more tips.
Just think... 1000 clients, ready to pay you a fiver if a horse wins... Nice opportunity for you to lay it off if you get your maths right, and make a profit either way! If you tip it to lose, same equation... You back the horse!

I've come across a few scams, but that last one has arisen since the Exchanges came into being.

My advice FWIW... Choose your own horses and stay with them, however you weed them out.
