Just read that Paddy power have paid out to everyone who put money on a white christmas. Why do some bookies pay out early like this before the event has happened. If there is not a white christmas they will have lost money. Why not just slash the odds further?

Maybe Paddy will be running around the major cities on Xmas day and masturbating the snow out :ooo

It's a loss leader basically. Free advertising that easily offsets the cost of paying out early and history tells these bookies that the majority of punters who are paid out early reinvest their payout so the bookies actually take back a fair portion of the payout.

Yep, most will reinvest in something a bit more realistic, like the second coming, or the USA finding Bin Laden.... or Arsenal winning the premiership this year.... :wink

It had to take a bit of class to get you posting then? :wink As a Scotsman I'm pretty much neutral about the Premiership, so that was tongue in cheek... wouldn't want to spoil your Christmas down under mate! :thumbs

Also, some people will think that a white Christmas is now a sure thing (since PP payed out on it) and will 'get on'. To be honest, it's unlikely that there will be snow at Christmas, certainly not at Dublin airport anyway where the bet is measured in Ireland. Not sure where it's measured in the UK, but there has to be at least an inch of snow for the bet to be successful.

I seen loads of paddypower articles and photos in the paper about him paying out. They wouldn't have had any massive bets on that and to advertise conventionally would probably have cost more.

In the UK you can bet on a white christmas in a given city and the local met office just have to record one flake of snow for it to count as far as I am aware
