Having just got back from the gambling capital of the world, I can report the following:

Gambling capital my :butthead:, regardless of how they dress the casino's up they are all exactly the same, full of brain dead zombies, and with 1000's of slots to choose from, unlike the UK ones were some skill can be used, Nevada law states that slots must contain zero skill, so they are all just basically spinning wheels. If you do go, and must play something, stick with the video poker/blackjack, better still, get on the real poker tables, and avoid everything else.

However, avoiding the casion areas and just looking around the place can be pretty impressive, with the Ventian standing out.

The Strip: Very impressive in the brochure :thumbs .....in real life....it is a huge building site stretching for miles, with multiple road works in the area, and plastic grass down the middle!! During the night it lights up, but this just hides the crap that you see during the day, and is really a cross between inner Manchester, and Blackpool. :ermmm

Also beware that if you go off-Strip, especially to Frank Sinatra Drive at the back of the Bellagio, Circus Circus, etc, you'll find all the brothels. :ass2

Traffic Accidents: Plenty of these happen daily, some serious, I past 5 in one day once :ooo. I still haven't decided if they are due to stupid American drivers, or confused tourists. Probably a bit of both, but it is advisable to always drive in the middle lane.

I covered over 2000 miles, I'm not a person who goes to a place and stays there, 2 weeks on the Strip would have made me suicidal after 24hrs. I visited the Hoover Dam, the new bridge buidling is very impressive, Mt Charleston, a small 12,000ft peak just outside Vegas, Red Rock Canyon, beautiful, Valley of Fire, again great scenery, and Death Valley.....that took the whole day, and we only done 1/2 of it. Very surreal place, but no death! :doh Also past a few places were atmospheric nukes went BOOM in the 50's :omg:

So would I recommend going? Certainly, but as long as you hire a car, and get out and about. If you are just going for the Strip, 5 days is long enough.

Due to the recession, you can get some great deals on Vegas now, with direct flights from Manchester and Heathrow.

Would I want to live there? Due to the relative ease of access with flights, and a much better climate than here with only 2" of rain a year, I would consider it.

PS. We also visited LA....what a :censored: dump!!! No wonder Beckham wants to stay in Italy. What the brochures do not tell you is that most of the year, the place is covered in smog & haze (worst air pollution in US). Have a look at the webcam here, and go through the archives/hall of fame to see the real LA.

Pictures: Red Rock Canyon, Lovell Canyon Road, Valley of Fire, Death Valley's Telescope Peak, Hoover Dam Bridge, First glimpse of LA!

If you do go, and must play something, stick with the video poker/blackjack, better still, get on the real poker tables, and avoid everything else.I have to pick up on this. The slot machines in Vegas are great for one thing - free booze. You can play the slots for 1c a line and press the button only now and then and still have the cocktail waitress coming round giving you free drinks. Nowhere else can you drink that cheaply. And I'm not sure if Keith's "video poker/blackjack" is video poker and video blackjack or video poker and normal table blackjack. I hope it is the latter as video blackjack has poor odds and rules and a much greater house edge than table blackjack. But whatever you play make sure you look up how to play the game and the best strategy for it before you play. No reason to give the casinos more than you have to so minimise your losses with a suitable playing strategy.

However, avoiding the casion areas and just looking around the place can be pretty impressive, with the Ventian standing out.Absolutely. Las Vegas is awesome for gawping at stuff. There is a lot to see in all of the big hotels and there's loads to keep you occupied as well as the gaming tables so you don't have to be a gambler to appreciate the place.

So would I recommend going? Certainly, but as long as you hire a car, and get out and about. If you are just going for the Strip, 5 days is long enough.I don't think you need a car. You can wander the strip for a few days if you take in all the hotels. Get a taxi downtown and see where Vegas started and the Fremont Street Experience - it's worth it. If you book tours out to Hoover Dam etc they will pick you up from your hotel. Much easier than having to negotiate chaotic traffic and parking up in huge parking lots way away from the glamourous front end of the casino hotels.

Bloody hell, you must need some run up to cross that Hoover Dam Bridge :D

I was reffering to playability rather than odds when mentioning the machines to play on if you must. You see people sitting at the same slots for hours. As for the free drinks, not much use for those of us who don't drink :)

Having a car is a must for me, tour buses are full of toursists, and you have to abide by their times, wasting plenty of it. I had been to the Hoover Dam, and was back in Vegas at 11pm, and had spent 2hrs there. :thumbs

Parking in Vegas is very easy, unlike the UK, plenty of space all over the city, and free, however, avoid Downtown with a car, this is the old area before the car was invented so it is like parking in a UK city, with similar parking fines, and they are very strict.

You can get good deals on flights (plane not chopper) over the Hoover Dam/Grand Canyon, you can haggle to £50 each, this includes collection/drop-off from your hotel, and is about 10hrs in all. However, I didn't find the time to do this, but lucky anyway, as our pilot on the return flight took a 'detour' and flew over the dam & canyon. :)

For a major city, crime is pretty low, especially compared with Philadelphia :omg:

One thing I will say though is that if you walk down the strip be prepared for lots of Mexicans/latinos trying to shove business cards for 'exotic dancers' in your hand. They are everywhere, and they don't care if you are young or old, on your own or quite obviously with a partner. But if you do want a girl to your room for $59 these fellas are the ones to ask :wink
