A strong race provided some interesting pointers for the Derby betting in particular as the Flat season gets into swing.
This race which took place at the Curragh on April 5 was a typically strong maiden for the track and should produce plenty of winners as all the top stables were represented and there were plenty of physically imposing sorts in the line-up. Seeu Central and Handsome Batchelor (saddle slipped) were ignored in a clear lead but the pace was still solid.
The winner Fergus Mciver had shown fairly useful form at two years, and won this well, despite carrying his head awkwardly when hitting the front. He has a progressive profile and he should be capable of winning more races.
Runner-up Wanna ran creditably in second and surely a maiden will simply be a formality before she tackles some bigger assignments. She doesn't look short of speed and it could prove to be that a mile is her optimum trip.
Third placed Princeton Plains ran a race full of promise. Still last entering the home turn, he stayed on eye-catchingly to pass the majority of the field. His jockey was far from hard on him and he can be expected to improve significantly on this effort.
Fourth home Handsome Bachelor did really well to finish as close as he did given his saddle slipped. He will have no problem wining a maiden as long as he can avoid such misfortunes.
Aidan O'Brien's pair Aristocrat (sent off odds on) and Johann Zoffany, the fifth and sixth home both ran better than their finishing positions would suggest; Aristocrat pulled too hard for his own good whilst Johann Zoffany wasn't knocked about and is capable of better this. Dermot Weld's Appetizer made a promising debut and should improve on this.
