I would like to start talking to people over Skype but at present I don't have the necessary equipment. I have a PC (good), an internet connection (yep) and Skype installed but I don't have a microphone or headset.

Can anyone recommend either a specific headset or what
to look for when buying one?

I use the Netgear phone as the PC doesn't have to be on....... USB wireless are good but not sure how much you want to spend. How long you talk also means what type you need as some get annoying after a while.

I won't be using it that much so I am after a cheap solution really. The PC being on isn't an issue - mine is almost always on anyway

How much is cheap Mat? Found some at Amazon and they range from about £11 upwards. Is £20 too much? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-PC-31-Headset-Binaural/dp/B001L6G326/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1280309121&sr=8-6
My brother got some headphones made by these and said they were excellent quality.

I'll be honest - I don't know how tight I am when it comes to this so am not really sure how cheap cheap is. £20 is probably too much given the amount I expect to actually use them.

I use a voip phone. Got it from amazon about two years ago and it's been excellent, never had any problems with it at all. PC needs to be on but like you mine's usually on if I'm home so that's not a problem. I think it was about £50 though so if you're not going to use it that much you might not want to go that route but I found it so much better than a headset. It also has a 50m range and charges via the usb socket.

Found it, here it is

The other thing to consider is you can use the phone for all calls except to mobiles in the uk for something like £2.99 per month or £7.99 worldwide.

Do you use Skype then Matt for your calls?

Do you use Skype then Matt for your calls? No, but I'm currently negotiating some work with a guy in Australia and it would be useful to actually talk to him rather than relying on emails.

A friend in New Zealand has recommended the Logitech PC Headset 120 which seems like a cheap enough option

Sorry Mat, I should've quoted as I was asking what MattR uses as he mentioned his phone but I am always interested in what you do! I never get your name wrong mate like some do! :laugh The reason I was asking is I hardly use my home phone and wondered if using VOIP would be a good idea for me, certainly looks like it would be a cheaper one as you have no line rental do you. I just wondered how much it costs if people ring you from landlines though, does anybody know...is it the same as ringing a landline and so if they have free calls at times of the day, are these included?

That headset is about £7 then Mat, not a bad price eh?

Yeah Scooby, mostly do. Just you can't call mobiles or 0845 numbers on it without credit on it. The monthly packages cover everything else. The world one is fantastic value for £7.99 a month and you get 10,000 minutes (with a 6 hours per day max) per month 'fair usage' which is more than enough!

I'll keep out of it now :)

OK, not just yet. I hardly use my landline either. I use my mobile when I need to make calls to use up the 'free' minutes. My landline only gets used when I need to rind non-geographic numbers which aren't free on mobiles. Other than that the landline sits there unused unless someone rings me

I'm not sure about that Scooby. I still have a landline but like you don't really use it. But I have broadband and not cable so need the line for the internet. So I've never set it up to receive incoming calls. I know that 3G do skype mobiles where you can call other skype phones from it.

Unlimited landline calls to the UK would do me I think, not bad for £4.58. Yes I think that fup is pretty good, can't see myself being on that long! :omg:

I think that one of you should change your name by deed poll, it would only be fair to us on here! Heads or tails Matt/Mat?

Ok thanks. I have had a 3 mobile once, when you live out in the sticks they are next to useless. I struggle to get a signal on my orange mobile where I am... and I am only 5 miles outside Lincoln. :frown:
