user profile service

just had a mate ring me up and i haven't got a clue, when he starts pc and types in his password all he is getting is "user profile service failed to log on" anyone know whats causing this and how to fix or get around, could he still start in safemode? which f button do you use ive forgotten. any help appreciated

No idea what that error is but hammer F8 on startup for safe mode

thanks for replies finally got it sorted booted in safe mode and went back to a previous system restore point.
