The Fugue (15-8) showed her credentials for the Investec Oaks with an impressive victory in the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes at York.

The John Gosden-trained filly showed no ill effects from an unlucky fourth in the 1000 Guineas to land this Classic trial in good style.

The odds-on favourite Twirl and complete outsider Aniseed cut out the running and it was the former who gave The Fugue the most to do at the business end of the race. However, she pulled away in the final furlong under William Buick to win by four and a half lengths. Esentepe was third.

Buick said: "She felt very good. She was a little bit keen early on and she's still inexperienced, so when horses come around her, she's a very reactive filly. I just tried to get her to settle and she picked up really well - she's class.

"The Guineas wasn't a very nice experience for her. She wasn't unlucky but she came out worst in a barging match and I'm just glad to have her back. At Epsom you need tactical speed and she certainly has that."

Gosden said: "She was back on ground she loved, which made a big difference. She's a lovely filly, she was a bit unlucky in the Guineas. All being well we'll head for Epsom, but I'll leave her in the French Oaks just in case it's soft.

"I didn't like running her here just 10 days after the Guineas, but I wanted to see if she was good enough for Epsom. I always felt she'd stay 10 furlongs and didn't know about the rest, but William says that will be no problem.

"She's got little ballerina feet that sunk at Newmarket so we just hope it's not soft at Epsom.

"If Aidan's horse (Twirl) hadn't run you could have questioned the form, but they really like her and she was heavily backed."

Christophe Soumillon has ended his association with Dabirsim following the colt's defeat in the French 2000 Guineas at Longchamp on Sunday.

The Belgian jockey told Paris-Turf that he lacked "chemistry" with the Christophe Ferland-trained three-year-old, who won two Group Ones for Frankie Dettori in an unbeaten juvenile campaign.

Soumillon has twice been out of luck aboard Dabirsim, who finished sixth in the French Classic at the weekend after he encountered desperate trouble in running.

Soumillon said: "I called the owner Simon Springer on Tuesday morning and I explained to him that I would prefer not to ride Dabirsim any more. I have gone over my two rides on him and I don't think I've made any big mistakes but you have to look at the facts. For some reason which I can't explain, I don't seem to get on with the colt.

"I'm not superstitious but the results speak for themselves - the chemistry isn't there between us. Regarding the horse and his connections, I think it's best for me to step aside and hope that the next jockey can help him rediscover his sparkle. I was very frustrated with how things turned out on Sunday and it's best not to continue."

Ferland is in no rush to make any firm decisions about who will ride Dabirsim on his next racecourse appearance.

He said: "There are plenty of able riders and the horse is not going to be running very soon, so we have some time to make a decision."

The French trainer admits his charge is not 100% after his luckless weekend run, and is keen to give him time before deciding on his next target - which could still be the July Cup at Newmarket.

He added: "The horse is just all right after his run on Sunday. He is not perfect after getting stopped in his run, but he will be OK. We will see how the horse is before we make any plans for him.

"There are plenty of options for him - there is the July Cup, the Prix Jean Prat and the Prix Maurice de Gheest. We will see first how the horse recovers. At the moment his best trip is seven furlongs and he can run over six furlongs, too, but I think he will stay a mile when he gets stronger. Next time he runs, we want him to have a nice run without having to break his action."
