I don't even know what nap means...I mean is it an abbreviation for something or....I know what the word is used for but the origin of it eludes me
Nap is an abbreviation of Napoleon.
I've read a few different explanations as to why this is used for your best bet. One stems from a card game and one from coinage apparently.

Yep, comes from a card game in which your best hand was known as a NAP hand. :)
NB is from the latin 'nota bene', which means 'next best'.
