Viruses
I have managed to get my computer scanned after much
tediousness.
Anyway, my scan detected 4 infections including a
Trojan Horse.
Now, my Internet security is not deleting them...
how do I go about deleting them manually!
Ta! :(

If you used the Trendmicro.com link, it will try to remove the virus for you if you select the Auto Clean option. Alternatively you can wait for it to detect the virus and select Clean.
If it's unable to delete the virus because it's in use or compressed, just write down the name. If you then click on the Security Info link it will let you do a search on that name and provide you with full instructions on removing it manually.
If all that fails, post the names in here.

Did you run the autoscan and ask it to clean the files for you?
If not, follow this link

Have you also got a decent firewall up like Norton or Panda? Zonealarm free, is the old, you get what you pay for.
Also are all your Windows patches up-to-date?

I use the free AVAST antivirus and its found hundreds upon hundreds of trojans, viruses etc...and it cant repair any of them, and u cant delete them cos you dont which files are important etc..even with hindreds of them my pc was still running fine, altho i had that dodgey one a while back that used to shut down your pc but soon sorted that. All Avast does is confine the viruses in a chest where they cant do any damage....somehow

If it doesn't repair them, why are you still using it?
You're better off either doing a search for an online virus checker or, as Keith says, you get what you pay for so think about spending some of your winnings on a decent version.

I had exactly the same problem a short while back. The anti-virus were useless. They located the problem, supposedly sorted it and then at the next boot it was there again.
I solved it using Security Task Manager - shareware but you get to use it free for 30 days. It identified that a file sysdu.dll was running in the background and seemed to be the culprit. Used the software to quarantine the offender and the problem is solved.
You can download the shareware trial from

Best of luck.

Never had a problem using Panda AV, and Norton Firewall, alomg with running a few other things.
If your on broadband, you DO NOT want to be running the free stuff.

5th February 2005 #13Very true! I use Norton AV - never had any problems with it, and Zone Alarm Pro. Had a look at Wistda's suggestion - looks like a nifty wee program. :)

Time for me to own up now. I've never owned any piece of AV or firewall software in my life, despite being online for 9 years or so. That's because I learnt enough about Windows OS in the the previous 16 years to ensure that my PC is an island of calm in a sea of tempestuous trojans and viruses.
What I will do is run an online AV checker once a week so that I can bask in that warm rosy glow of smugness as yet another clean bill of health is displayed before my very eyes. :D
But I wouldn't recommend this approach to 99% of users out there. If you don't know how to prevent getting infected, then invest in the tools that can do it for you.
Oh, and use common sense. Don't even bother downloading emails from people you don't know particularly if they've got attachments, don't download "iffy" software, don't set up peer-to-peer networking to download music and leave it running in the system tray for a second longer than necessary, don't slap in that free CD your mate acquired down the carboot sale.

All good common sense advice Glos.... as for e-mail - I'd suggest getting hold of Mailwasher or similar - that intercepts all e-mails at server so you can check them before they even get on to your system, and it works with AOL as well! You can filter crap and remove them or even bounce them back to where they came from - though that's not much use if they're from a false address.
