What is the saddest song ever?

I love songs and poems that are sad, and about unrequited love and stuff like that for some reason. Especially ones which strikes a chord with you. We were talking about this in the pub, and trying to figure out the saddest song of all time.

a few sad songs that I like:

The streets - dry your eyes
    Bobby goldsboro - honey
Roy orbison - only the lonely
James blunt - Goodbye my lover
Jim Reeves/Elvis/Various - There goes my everything

but my fav. has to be Roy Orbison's beuatiful dreams :)

    What is the saddest song?

    Tada gan iarracht

I;d certainly agree with the Roy Orbison tracks, he had the perfect voice for that sort of song.... Oldham's Queen suggestion is a good one too... as is another Queen song which became more poignant with Freddie's passing - "Too Much Love Will Kill You". If you read the lyrics on the last couple of Queen albums there are quite a few songs that are obviously very personal from Freddie...

Another sad one that I;m sure especially gets John Noakes in tears... Old Shep... :wink

My keyboard's running out of ink....

Agadoo...... oh sorry THAT kind of sad. :D

There are many I guess. One that most may have not heard before is called Tonight Is The Night I Fell Asleep At The Wheel by The Barenaked Ladies. All about dying in a car crash from the persons view.

A Deep Purple song called "When A Blind Man Cries" is another sad one... a surprising ballad from them, stuck on the 'B' side of a single in 1972, they now do it live regularly.. lyrics below

If you're leaving close the door
    I'm not expecting people anymore
Hear me grieving, lying on the floor
Whether I'm drunk or dead, I really ain't too sure

    I'm a blind man
    I'm a blind man
    And my world is pale
    When a blind man cries
    Lord you know
    There ain't no sadder tale

Had a friend once in a room
Had a good time but it ended much too soon
In a cold month in that room
We found a reason for the things we had to do

    I'm a blind man
    I'm a blind man
    Now my room is cold
    When a blind man cries
    Lord you know
He feels it from his soul

My keyboard's running out of ink....

Not right now but I can get it for you pretty quickly... it's one of my favourite Purple songs, Gillan sings it beautifully, and Blackmore plays some incredible understated blues guitar through it.... I'll let you know by PM when I have it ready :)

Very difficult to choose .... but the first one that comes to mind is another Sinead O'Connor one, Thank You For Hearing Me. Amazing voice, brilliant song but just oozes raw pain.

    Also, Suzanne Vega - Luka
The Stones - Love in Vain ( tho' I prefer the original Robert Johnson
    version)
    Beatles - Eleanor Rigby
Walker Brothers - The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Any More
    Gary Jules - Mad World
