    Poker night

My missus wants to invite some of her team from work to play a beginners' poker night round our house. I have said she can use our table (generous aren't I? ) and my cards and chips as long as I can play :D

But I am struggling with the format as time is a bit of a factor.

We're looking at 10-12 players, so 1 x 10-seater or 2 x 6-seater tables - we can accomodate either really. But she would like the event over in a reasonable time and not have people sat around waiting for ages once they are knocked out.

I have tried to arrange live tourneys at mine before where the blinds went up every 10 minutes and with a few beginners in the game that means blinds are going up every other hand or so. It quickly becomes a crapshooot and I think that gives a false impression of the game. It also meant a few people were out early on and the final few places took a while to get settled so people got bored.

So has anyone any suggestions for a no limit hold'em format that can be played by the majority of players for the majority of the session (say 2-3 hours)? Cash games are out apparently (at least to start with) because while that means people can up and leave whenever the missus would rather have a top 3 type prize structure.

The best suggestion I could come up with was to play a cash game using chips to keep score and the top three divvy up the prize pool accordingly when a set time is reached. But I don't especially like that idea.

Someone must have a better idea...

if you can have 2X6 seater games you could have, a 6 seater game on each. when 6 people get knocked out - the tables swap round, so you have the 6 people who are still in on 1 table - playing for the majority of the cash. then the 6 who went out play on the other table for a smaller cut. (top 3 pay on main table - top 2 pay on 'loser' table)

    this has the advantages of:
    - people who get knocked out early get a 2nd chance.
    - players swap tables, so people mix round a bit.
    - ability leveles are matched a bit better when tables swap round.

    ..................................

or you could have re-buys for the first hour or so.

That's not a bad idea, although I'd probably pay two places on the main table and the winner only on the losers table. And someone will no doubt moan that someone who was knocked out could win more than someone who wasn't and made the final table. Unless we have rebuys as you say. But as they are new to the game the plan was a fiver buy-in to minimise losses so not sure I could convince all the losers to rebuy. And the 2x6 means we need 12 players and despite what the missus thinks I reckon she'll get 8-10 including me and her.

I really want this to go well because my live games are running out of regular players. I'd love to play over here once a month or more but I just can't get the players these days.

or (i know you don't like speed games, but) - have 2 - 6 seater speed (or turbo) games, you should be able to fit plenty of games in, in the available time, and people who get knocked out won't have to wait too long to start again.
the buy ins could be seperate for each game, or a league structure - 1st-5 2nd-3 3rd-1 point etc....... then the 3 top players get the cash.

    as the old saying goes,

"you can skin a fish twice, before he calls you a cheeting b#####d, and refuses to play you again."

I could step the blinds every hand I guess, that'd turbo things a bit. Not mental steps though. Perhaps with starting stacks of 1000 start at 5-10 then go 10-20, 15-30, 20-40, 25-50, 30-60, 50-100, 75-150, 100-200, 150-300, 200-400, 250-500 etc till we have a winner. The problem I am having is working out how long the game will take. I want to give people enough time to learn to play, although I will do a 30-minute introductory session to get them used to the mechanics of the game before we play any hand for cash.

That's not a bad idea at all. I like that.

I don't even make much cash out of these poker nights. I wish I had friends I could play serious poker with but with the exception of maybe two or three of them I couldn't persuade any of my lot to play for even semi-serious cash. A swing of £20-30 is as good as we get per person really. If I could persude people to take it seriously so we're stepping up into the realms of playing for £50 or £100 a night I'd be happier. With my bunch it's about drinking till the early hours with the poker almost a sideline.

havn't played a propper live game for about 6 years

used to play in the pub where i worked, from 10pm (shut early) till 10am the next day , and had some real 'nutters' who would (and did) bet £100 on who turned up the higher card - or £50 on who could throw the card the furthest

the boss was quite a serious player (but cack) who had the keys to the safe :D so we (I) had some good games

though that game died out over time.

    .................................

on a seperate note - is it true that 'small stakes' (no more than £10 buy in) will be allowed in pubs this september / october?
i heard about it a while ago, but havn't heard anything since.

Not heard anything about that and while I hope it is true I doubt it can be unless they successfully get the game reclassified. Oh, hang on, does the new gambling act come into effect this September? In that case maybe it is true. At the minute there are various pub poker leagues etc going on but none of them are for cash, which kinda takes away the point really. So getting cash poker in pubs would be nice.

I was reading something about this advertising legislation the other day and I gather PokerStars has been a bit sneaky with it. Something to do with registering in the Isle of Man so not being subject to the UK casino/poker tax rules but legally able to advertise on TV and radio over here. Or something along those lines.
