To be fair, in IE6 I don't think they were included. IE7 has them, but only after Bill got a wake-up call from Mr Mozilla. Firefox is the only browser for me, it's the best there is.

Wing mirrors on your monitor? :wink

Must admit I've never really looked at any other browsers - had a play around with Opera and it was pretty decent, but IE works fine for me so no real need to change. On a related note it was interesting to see AOL have finally put Netscape Navigator to sleep... when I first went online back in the summer of 1996 that was the only browser worth having... how times have changed!

Avant's not bad but I much prefer Mozilla. Seems by far the best with Betfair as well.

IE is fine - once you've disabled the Phishing thing! Don't just switch it off, disable it in the Advanced tab of Internet Explorer>Options. Better still, just go an get Mozilla - it runs quicker and opens pages in new tabs when YOU want them to (rather than opening pages in all the tabs you already have open but just aren't using at that particular moment in time!!).

    stops you from carping on.....

I think it's meant to prevent dodgy websites from nicking your personal details by whatever means they use.

Phishing is basically (as I know it) where someone creates an almost identical version of a website (for example, a bank's website) that collects data and sends it to Person X when you login. A typical situation would be:

    1. Receive email from 'Bank X'.
    2. Click on a hyperlink asking to you login to receive X service.
    3. Website you arrive at looks and feels the same as your bank's.
    4. Login details are sent to some random person. Now they have access to your bank account.

So yeah, don't turn off the phishing filter. :)

It checks every webpage you visit against Microsoft's database of known sites that try to steal your information.

I have never heard of a single instance of anyone actually managing to land on one of these sites but the people most likely to do so are the same ones that send their bank details in belief that they have won a lottery they never entered!

Using a fairly conservative figure of 200 billion page requests a day, it is unsurprising that people complain that the World Wide Web is getting slower all the time - they're all queueing up at Microsoft just in case someone wants to steal their overdraft!!

Conflicting advice, but Oldham is right here - the phishing filter slows down IE7 horribly as it has to check every single page you visit, so unless you make a habit of doing all the daft things he suggests, it's perfectly safe to completely disable it.

Unless you happen to receive a phishing email from your bank of course - I've had two, a friend has had one, and both of us are extremely careful with our money and what we do online.

(Just use Firefox, you know it makes sense).
