Problem

Tried to burn a CD in realplayer and it said that I had no burner connected.

So, I played the file in Windows Media and tried to burn it there, and it says 'connect a burner and restart'

I've never had problems before - any ideas what's wrong? I burned CDs in both only last week. (using a laptop by the way).

1. uninstall real player and try again.

2. go to download.com and download a free cd burning program. test it using that. if it don't work then its probably the burning lens which has gone.

if it worked and you didn't download any funny stuff on your laptop then by fault elimination its probably the lens that's. gone.

Thanks, got half way down but the rest of the instructions were for XP or 2000, and did not apply. I'm using vista.

I don't see why Vista should make that much difference. Here's the low-down from MS which repeats the information given in that link:

As all articles say, the problem is usually caused when you install more than one CD burning software, or when you fail to do a clean uninstall of CD burning software.

Oh Dear. I've really gone and done it now :splapme

I'm on my PC now. I followed the instructions on the microsoft site, but when I restarted, the keypad wont work and it wont let me type (the wireless mouse still works though). There is a little lock icon lit up on the keypad itself but I can't change it (as far as I know it related to something else though).

Found the on-screen keyboard under accessories, so typed my password and am attempting a system restore. Fingers crossed.

Sorted it out thankfully. Ended up doing a system restore - very bloody handy for someone like me!

Very handy for those of us who know what we are doing as well, especially after the kids have been on my parents computer and installed God knows what!!!
