router
hi guys,
Right please don't ridicule me too harskly here as i am complete
when it comes to technology.
When i am trading i have 2 laptops and additional screens.
One laptop i use just to interprate market data and basically look at how things are developing and the other i use for actual trading.
Now the one that i use for trading on is directly in to the modem thats fine, but the other one i use on my neighbours wireless as it doesnt have to be super fast. The selfish neighbour has started turning his off at sillytimes so i need to get my internet on the other computer.
A while ago i bought arouter i opened it up tried to install it, couldn't so swore at it 5 times and kicked it approximately 15 and 3/4 times. I now need to use it so it is sat here in all its spleandour accompanied by a yellow lead which resides within one of 4"lan" ports in the back, a phone type lead which i am guessing goes in to the phone socket and apower supply.
Would anyone care to educate me on the joy of router cheers sc

How does the other laptop connect to the internet? The one NOT using the neighbour's wireless?
Is it an ADSL modem? If so, does it have a cat-5 (LAN) cable going into the laptop?
If so, it is likely that the original modem is configured by your supplier and simply swapping it for another won't work. What you may be able to do is use the second ADSL modem as a switch - but you'll need a third cat-5 cable.
The first lead should go from the original modem to the first port on the Netgear box. You should them be able to run leads from the Netgear box to both laptops.
Unless your provider has specifically set your original router to only allow a static IP address through it (highly unlikely) then this set up should work.
(Before buying an extra cat-5 cable, try it with one cable going to each laptop in turn to make sure that they are connecting to the outside world).

Thanks oldham helpful as always, i have configured the router on the laptop that uses the neighbours wireless using the lan cable. I have removed the lan cable and tried to access the wireless on my main laptop, i entered the password key i set up on the first machine and this one is now working fully with the router and i have saved it to default to this connection automatically from now on.
Now after removing the lan cable from the first machine i can not get it to work with the router independantly will reboot and give it another go cheers sc

Routers don't normally go slow - it is usually something else causing the problems.
Do you use any peer to peer or other file sharing programs? Do you have BBC iPlayer installed or iTunes?
All of these will happily run in the background eating up your bandwidth and effectively making your network connection grind to a halt.

Try closing everything visible and then right click on the Task Bar and select Task Manager. Go to Processes so that you can see what is going on and watch it for a while to see if any processes are still running; System Idle Process should be more or less steady between 90 and 99 - if it isn't, look to see which process is hogging the CPU. DO NOT STOP THE PROCESS unless you know what the process is and why it is running.
