    Fridays Daily Topic

Caught in the act, yet walk free.

Whilst 2 burglars were breaking into a house with a crowbar a neighbour took a photo of them.
They fled with a plasma TV, laptop and Nintendo DS worth £1,400.
The neighbour gave the photo to the police and the pair were arrested and admitted the burglary.
But rather than lock up the serial crooks, the judge gave them a "final chance" to go straight.
One was given a one-year suspended sentence and ordered to attend a drug scheme.
The other was given an 18 months supervision order.

They didn't even get a fine.

Aren't judges still under orders to avoid jailing burglers because of a lack of prison space?

Not sure about that Vegy, it's possible.
I suppose if they fined them they would steal to pay the fine.
What is wrong with giving them some hard labour, not tidying peoples gardens though that wouldn't be a good idea.

Cheryl Cole's brother, Andrew Tweedy, has been allowed to walk free after pleading guilty to common assault, attacking a man by spraying him with pepper spray (which is also considered to be a 'prohibited weapon' (does that mean that some weapons are permitted?)

Long story short, he gets 100 hours community service and has to pay £250 compensation.

Judge David Hodson said Tweedy's record - he has been convicted on 30 occasions for 82 separate offences since 1993 - was "pretty atrocious" but said he would spare him a jail term because he believed he would finally be able to put his offending behind him.
