    Each way betting

I realise there isn't necessarily a hard and fast rule regarding a question I have about each way betting, since different systems use different criteria, however I was looking for guidance on when it can be more prudent to back each way rather than win only.

I'm not talking so much about Pro Bets, given that they're both win and each-way selections, but more about a general cut-off point on the kind of price where it may be best to put an e-w bet on.

From looking at other systems from reliable vendors, e-w seems to be advised around the 9/2 or 5/1 mark, and I was wondering if this is an accurate rule of thumb, allowing for the aforementioned 'quirks' of different types of systems.

If it's a 'system' then it is WIN OR EW OR PLACE, it cannot be a mixture. With the Pro-Bets you decide what you are going to do before you start and stick to it, although WIN is always the most profitable.

If you're doing method betting then you can change the bet type depending on what risks you decide. I seldom back EW unless it's 20/1+

Depends on your attitude to gambling. I'm willing to back a horse e.w. at 5/1 or more. My first rule of betting is not to lose money! If my horse comes second to a 66/1 chance, (sods law) at least I get my money back, I haven't lost, AND I've had a free bet.

I don't bet each way often but when I do it's for my own fun/method bets only, never systems and I'm usually looking for odds of 16/1 or better. Other factors to look at are number of places paid and whether you're getting 1/4 odds or 1/5 odds for the place if using a bookmaker. Often the bookmakers place prices will beat betfair prices but then you're usually getting less on the win price.
