About time, Labour really screwed up our education system managing to give us a generation of teenagers that have no understanding of grammar, and can't manage simple sums or spelling.

Wow, a step backward that is a step in the right direction. The main problem in recent times I think is the pressure for schools to appear good therefore making the exams easy so it looks like they are a wonderful school with all the A students they have, even though those A's are probably lucky to be C's at the old standard. Not to mention it devalues the grade of a genuine A student when half the school are getting A's as well!

Just watched Question Time & covered topic in depth - I agree with the chap who said they should be concentrating on the early years...

If like u say ppl are leaving school illiterate without basic arithmetic skills - back in my day you would have had to have shown a certain level of ability to do O'levels - sounds to me like the problem has already set-in well before the final years - bring back the 11 plus or something like it.

Under Labour the policy was to teach the kids how to pass the exam and not actually teach them subjects in full and use the exam to ask questions on it to see if they'd learnt anything. The fact around 25%-50% of the exam is 'course work' that everyone passes is a joke.

It wasn't Labour that got rid of O Levels and CSE's...it was Thatcher. So I dont think you can blame this all at Labours door. This has little chance of getting through with the Lib Dems though, fancy not telling their coalition partners...anyone would think it was a Tory government!!

I never said who got rid of the 'O' levels, but it was Labour that made qualifications meaningless in the business world ...... and I was voting for them at the time

Yup, the rot was already in motion when Labour took over & that was the trouble with them, they had a Tory leader in Tony Blair who never really shifted from Tory policy.
